• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You forget easily, don't you?

Yes, surprisingly, because I don't surround myself with Biblical literalists except on this website.

That "black and white" is going to judge them in the end.

"And the books were opened."

All 66 of them.

And you'll be there as much as I will, ol' buddy, ol' pal.

Part of your problem is that you neither listen much to anyone, nor do you seem to want to get outside of your own epistemic bubble to learn more. That's a tragedy where being on a Christian Forum and engaging on the pros and cons of Christianity is concerned.

I do like his term "combative" though, a la Ephesians 6.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Obviously, you and I have in mind different denotations of the definition of "truism." I'm leaning toward the denotation of 'cliche.'
S'funny. You've used truism at least twice. And it really only refers to something that's actually true. The clue is in the name. Now you've realised what you've said you want to say 'Oops, is it OK if I change that?'

No.

Scene: Sermon on the Mount.
'Darn it Dave, shutup why don't you. I missed that. What he say?
'Sorry buddy. I think he said to treat others like you'd like to be treated yourself. Words to that effect anyway.'
'Huh. This isn't worth it. Same ol' cliches. Wanna go for a beer?'

I can almost guarantee that I'm less assertive about what I feel to be true that almost all the Christians in this forum.

I'm glad to hear that.

As I've already stated, I might be wrong.

Good!

You see Light at the end of the tunnel, I pray.

That's a very rare comment for any given Christian to make when it comes to God.

When an atheist shows a Christian he is wrong, that says more about the Christian than it does the atheist.

It would be like a Vietcong telling an American:

"You're supposed to pull the pin first, THEN throw the grenade!"

But, yet again, my beliefs don't change what I said one iota. They stand.

Ya -- don't embarrass yourself.

Pride cometh before the fall.

Ah, bless you. You really tried to say that what I wrote was correct, but you just couldn't manage it. Rather than 'what he said' you just had to write 'all he spouted'. And you couldn't manage 'it was true', you had to type 'simple truism'.

I think that says more about you than about what I actually posted.

Why is it all I see being repeated over and over is the Golden Rule; and not what preceded it?

Or resident truncater here is getting contagious, isn't he?

You can't say that with any certainty because you only know me from your limited interactions with me on this website.

Ya ... it's not like you have any coded heuristics, is it?

You just sit and critique those who do.

Considering that Plato was born roughly in 428 - 427 BC and died in 348 - 347 BC, I'd call your pastor MASSIVELY mistaken, to be polite.

Sorry.

I meant Philo.

Thanks for the correction.

He made it somewhat our business when He posted it here.

If you think he posted something that is TMI, then just ignore it.
I don't see anywhere that Jesus tells us to force our beliefs upon other people's children, or grandchildren in this case, etc.
Fair enough.

You want us to ignore it too?
You shouldn't expect an atheistic family to be teaching each other the gospel within their own private family structures/conversations/businesses, etc. That's why I ignored it. It's picking nits in this case.
I'm not setting the Great Commission aside on this one, just to placate his potential deadly advice.
I don't see anywhere that Jesus tells us to force our beliefs upon other people's children, or grandchildren in this case, etc.

As far as I know, he only talks about your own children, or at most, other people's children out in public, or in the public square, and not within their own private family structures uninvited, etc.
I'm supposed to.

Pr 22:6 ¶ Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

2Ti 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
And I'm not saying you shouldn't with your own family/children.
Nope.

It's not "fuss."
It's a fuss.

It's none of our business what happens or goes on within anothers own private family structures, especially when their beliefs differ greatly from ours, etc.
It's called "obedience."
It's not in this case.
And maybe, just maybe, they want to see their kids in Heaven with them.

Ya think?
You don't think the parents are going to heaven though?
Yup -- let the world have 'em -- right?
Look, this is about different styles/strategies. I prefer to tell/teach my children/other people in a way that instills trust, so that they'll still feel comfortable coming to me later on with questions when they need to, or as they come up, and I can 100% guarantee you, they're going to come up, etc. So, in the meantime I work on how to be best prepared to answer those questions when they do come up, etc.

If a child starts to have honest sincere questions/doubts about religion/God, and if all their parents have been doing is trying to ram their beliefs down their throats, and the children don't feel comfortable coming to them with the kinds of questions they are now beginning to have, or are starting to be asking, and also already knows that their parents are going to be ill equipped to handle them anyway, then that's when they're left to the world to answer those kinds of questions, etc, and I want them to come to me when they're having those kinds of questions, etc.
Then you'll wonder what happened when they end up lying on the floor of a school library after having shot themselves.
Well, this comment is unnecessary, etc.
When a person is left to the lions, I pray the Lion of the Tribe of Judah gets the final consideration.
I hope so too, but I also hope they'll feel comfortable enough with me to come to me also, and that I will by that time have made myself adequately prepared/equipped to handle their kinds of questions by that point, etc.
Let's hope so.
Never give up hope, etc.

God Bless.

I'll repeat myself: You can't say that with any certainty because you only know me from your limited interactions with me on this website.

Yup.

It will be shown to us.

In Writing.

And more intimately shown to us when we die.

So Bradskii gave us TMI?

To be fair, this thread had gone of the rails so it seemed a bit par for the course. The reactions were a trite unnecessary.

No, I do not believe that in the slightest. There's not a hint that Philo is doing it for anyone's benefit but his own.

That's not what I picked up on.

You may have, but I didn't.

I sure will.

As a spectator, not a participant.

Don't be so quick to say that.

Matthew 12:35 - 37
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Because what preceded it is relevant only to Christians. In itself it's good advice that can be accepted by all. You don't need a particular religion or even a particular belief to accept it as good advice. It's universal.

But you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

It may be construed as good advice to a Buddhist, Hare Krishna, or Deist; but re Christianity?

It's called "blasphemy".
