  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

He has no idea what that makes him look like.
I see behavior, that Trump wasn't taught, by his parents to get out of the way, when he should. They were rich and it didn't matter.

I believe he's always been like this. There's internet news to see it.
He's gotten worse about showing it in public since his executive function has declined.

You could also you know... Bother reading your own link so you wouldn't look like you'd just looked up any number you could find to try and help Trump not look like the infantile narcissist that he appears to be, and not even get the number right.

And it's also hilarious that you tried holding money/aid over someones head as a cudgel because your president acted like a pillock. Very mature.

This allows people to sort by year.

2007 - about 3.8 Million
2009 - about 1.3 Million
2010 - about 6.7 Million
2011 - about 15 Million
2012 - about 2 Million
2013 - another 1 Million
2014 - another 2 million
2018 - another 500k
2022 - another 3.4 million
2023 - another 800k

And you want to take a guess as which NATO member state was consistently the lowest contributor for years?

(meanwhile, other countries, primarily us, paid in more to pick up the slack)

So, "we'll take the money, but get off the stage so you don't ruin our sportsball picture"

What's more "entitled", wanting to be in a world cup picture? Or expecting other nations give you millions in direct aid, and shoulder the cost of providing their defense?

Why is he insisting on being in the middle of someone else's celebration like a tone deaf boor? He didn't belong in the team photo - he is not part of the team (in fact, he rooted for Argentina which lost despite dirty playing).

And again, I can't believe that Trump makes himself look like a needy kid trying to gain attention and you suggest he should maybe cancel any financial dealings he has with Spain.

How does that make any sense whatever?

Select "disbursements" in the drop down on the right

Obligations are what a government "commits to" in some sort of binding way.

Disbursements are money getting sent.

This has anything to do with the president thinking he belongs in other people's spotlight at every occasion?

No, it is a red herring meant to derail and distract from Donald's disgraceful, embarrassing display.

Or if you're looking specifically for a case where it was a leader from the host country standing out there in the celebration photos when their team didn't actually win...

There's the Al Gore example:

Which countries invested the most capital into the World Cup this time around in terms of hosting and making the event happen?

Given the fact that the US gives Spain hundreds of millions of dollars (of our money)

And the contributions used to be much bigger

Had it not been for the US pumping billions into their country a few decades back, they wouldn't have rebounded after Francisco Franco.

...forgive me if I'm not terribly concerned whether or not their soccer team/league is offended by a sitting US president being part of their ceremony. I bet they don't kick a US president out off the stage when it was time to collect a check.

I'm not a huge Trump fan...but other countries need to realize who's buttering their bread.
I’m not sure what any of this has to do with our president being so clueless he doesn’t realize he’s photobombing the championship team photo but thanks to the magic of editing, Spain gave Trump the Nikolai Yezhov treatment and cut him out of their photos. The guy cannot stop embarrassing himself and the country and somehow there’s still people like you proving cover.

Unbelievable.

In that case, we should be having some auditors looking at whether or not those multi-multi million dollar (and in some cases, billion) expenditures to Europe are worth it lol

Sorry to go all "Murica", but a lot a those countries exist based on the fact that they took money out of my check and ship it overseas. (that doesn't even factor in the fact that our navy, which I also pay for, ensures that all of those countries can engage in commerce)

We hand out money to a bunch of countries, ensure maritime trade security, and receive 0 in terms of foreign aid from anyone else.

I don't care whether our current president is right wing nut or a radical left-winger... we could have a president with the same views as Mamdani... the proper response would be "thank you".
lol delusional American take right here. Spain wins the World Cup and you think they somehow owe us something. Like they should be thankful this crook is trying to steal their moment.

It would be one thing is this was simply a display of his dismal personal character.

But my sense is the presidents extreme need for praise and validation leaks into policy making, especially foreign policy.

Chirac is standing in the back, not in front of the team. And it is France's team that won not a team he rooted against.

Al Gore is presenting the trophy, not trying to take it for himself.

Was it even done at Spain's behest? It seems everything is redacted.

The reason I ask, is that I know that things are called foreign aid when it also benefits and aligns with US goals (case in point, the transport of plutonium from Sweden to the US in 2012). The Global Threat Reduction Initiative was aligned with US goals as well as swedish.

There was $300 in disbursements in 2024.

So you're suggesting that leaders of host countries being involved in the celebration ceremonies is nothing new...

Nor is trying to be the "center of attention" for an achievement that the leader had nothing to do with.

Basically, this is another instance of fixation on a trivial difference from the historical precedent, and acting if that trivial difference is somehow "shocking and appalling" and represents the decline of western civilization.

Is it a slow news week where the "outrage of the week" is pertaining to a president of a host country wanting to get his picture taken with a winning soccer team?

No, attributing your take to me is dishonest. That framing is completely yours, not mine. Read the OP for my pov.

Where are all your photos of leaders elbowing their way onto the podium? Where are are the video clips of said leaders having to be ushered off by FIFA officials?
Basically, this is another instance of fixation on a trivial difference from the historical precedent, and acting if that trivial difference is somehow "shocking and appalling" and represents the decline of western civilization.
Cluelessly trying to hog the spotlight is not new. And you're correct that among the "shocking and appalling" things this president has done (sexual assault and bragging about it, openly defying US courts, gross profiteering off the office, cryptogrift, selling pardons, etc., etc., etc.) this is trivial, but iconic. This is less "shocking and appalling" and more "embarrassing and publicly humiliating himself".
Is it a slow news week where the "outrage of the week" is pertaining to a president of a host country wanting to get his picture taken with a winning soccer team?
This isn't the "outrage of the week" as there are plenty more far more serious. This is just one more straw on the camel's back.

I am reminded of a thread that was about african countries no longer wishing to receive donated clothing, because those clothes are then sold on their markets instead of distributed for free and destroy their textile industry. The general consensus among conservative forum users was that this was ground to cut off every kind of foreign aid to those countries.
