Cluelessly trying to hog the spotlight is not new. And you're correct that among the "shocking and appalling" things this president has done (sexual assault and bragging about it, openly defying US courts, gross profiteering off the office, cryptogrift, selling pardons, etc., etc., etc.) this is trivial, but iconic. This is less "shocking and appalling" and more "embarrassing and publicly humiliating himself".
