If the boos at his parading down the field were not enough, Donald J Trump tried to insert himself into the Spanish team's triumphal celebration. FIFA head Infantino had to drag him off the stage while the confetti canons went off. How humiliating for the so-called Leader of the Free World to have to be escorted off to the sideline.

On Sunday, Spain secured a narrow 1-0 triumph over 10-man Argentina in the World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium. Ferran Torres came off the bench to net the decisive goal as the UEFA European champions claimed World Cup glory following Enzo Fernández's red card.

After supporters finally gained entry to the stadium due to the heightened security measures prompted by Trump's attendance — which saw him jeered by those inside — the match got underway with a hard-fought opening 45 minutes. In the second half, Spain maintained the upper hand while Argentina struggled to gain any traction, failing to register a single shot even through extra time, via The Mirror US.

...Ahead of the trophy ceremony, Trump strode onto the pitch alongside Infantino. He was met with boos once again from the watching crowd, who had already made their feelings toward the 80-year-old abundantly clear during the national anthems.

Once all the fanfare had wrapped up, Spain and captain Rodri were finally presented with the iconic trophy by Trump. However, just as he had done a year earlier during the Club World Cup Final, Trump chose to linger, and rather than allowing the captain and his teammates their moment, Trump sought the limelight. This followed his participation in the medal distribution before refusing to vacate the stage.

Infantino even had to rush across the platform to reach Trump, who refused to move from the edge of the stage. Undeterred, Rodri lifted the trophy and sparked the festivities as he and his teammates didn't appear to care that there was an uninvited guest. Trump was subsequently escorted away to allow the Spanish players to celebrate on their own.

Which countries invested the most capital into the World Cup this time around in terms of hosting and making the event happen?

Given the fact that the US gives Spain hundreds of millions of dollars (of our money)

And the contributions used to be much bigger

Had it not been for the US pumping billions into their country a few decades back, they wouldn't have rebounded after Francisco Franco.

...forgive me if I'm not terribly concerned whether or not their soccer team/league is offended by a sitting US president being part of their ceremony. I bet they don't kick a US president out off the stage when it was time to collect a check.

I'm not a huge Trump fan...but other countries need to realize who's buttering their bread.

Sorry to go all "Murica", but a lot a those countries exist based on the fact that they took money out of my check and ship it overseas. (that doesn't even factor in the fact that our navy, which I also pay for, ensures that all of those countries can engage in commerce)

We hand out money to a bunch of countries, ensure maritime trade security, and receive 0 in terms of foreign aid from anyone else.

I don't care whether our current president is right wing nut or a radical left-winger... we could have a president with the same views as Mamdani... the proper response would be "thank you".

Your president makes himself look like a moron, he's pilloried for it and you think it's therefore justified to examine US connections with Europe?

That's a third grade level attitude. Which I'd not only expect from Trump but I've seen it on countless occasions from him. I guess you're so used it by now that it becomes an acceptable norm.

No it doesn't. The US "gave" Spain 300 dollars in FY2024. Not $300 million, just $300.

The US foreign aid tracker (FA.gov) shows that Spain does not get "hundreds of millions of dollars (of our money)".
Spain has received less than $1 million in total US foreign aid since FY2014, and no substantial foreign aid since the end of the 1980s.

The aid provided in FY2024 was waived costs for a single aviation medical examiner refresher seminar.

In the last five decades, the main aid the US has provided to Spain was for the USA's own security.

The ravening paranoia of the US security apparatus after September 11 meant they were throwing money at other countries to purchase/install (US-made) screening equipment for ports and airports. The US spent about $850 million on radiological screening devices for foreign countries between 2003 and 2011, including about $35 million on radiological screening equipment at three major ports in Spain.

Post-Franco aid to Spain in the 1970s and 1980s was chiefly military in nature, mostly concessions on pricing/credits to purchase military equipment and spending on infrastructure to support US military bases.

It wasn't development or economic aid, it was Cold War military spending to get the Spanish military to NATO standards. Figures are spotty but in for the few years that I do have data in the early 1980s, US military aid for Spain was 15 to 20 times higher than development aid.

For the benefit of the US. It is costs for refresh seminars for aeromedical examiners, most likely. Yes, they account for the whole sum $300.

The likelihood is that Infantino was the one being booed. FIFA has been corrupt as long as I've known it, but under him it's at new levels.
