  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think you're forgetting that refusing to fight -- whether you are a Christian or an atheist -- is a court martial offense.

The point in question is:

What is going through their minds when they are engaging the enemy?

Are they doing it "for God and country"?

Or are they doing it to avoid a charge of desertion?

Or both? or neither?
I’m not really sure what you are trying to convey? Let me simply ask: do you agree that only those who believe in God/god and an afterlife are superior, and more valiant warriors than those who do not hope in God/god nor an afterlife? Simple yes or no should suffice.

Yes.

BUT there are exceptions.

An atheist could very well fall on a grenade tossed into the midst of his squad, while Christians run for cover.

BUT ... factor in the fact that I believe there are no atheists in foxholes, and you can see my dilemma.

This is about a dear very close friend, an atheist, (he's passed on now) who was in the heat of the Vietnam Tet offense in 1968. Only once when pretty high on the Weed did I ever hear from any of his experience. Usually he was pretty mum about that whole thing. And never once in sharing his experienced did God or belief in God ever come up. What he did talk about which hit his soul that stayed with him is looking into the eyes of other human beings (they were that close and a lot of them) as he shot them before they shot him. As he told the story, staying alive was the ONLY thing he was focused on.

I honestly didn’t ever think I’d see “religion makes ‘War’ better!”, but here we are.

Talking about religion in the broadest sense - the more religion the more corruption. This was a finding passed on by the Japanese theologian Dr. Koyama who was my lecturer in Phenomenology of religion.

Can you expand on that please, or perhaps I mean clarify. Is "more" religion more diversity of religion, more followers of religion, more commitment to following religion and so on? These are all quite different and would be expected to have different effects. (And there are likely to be more possible "mores").

Likewise with corruption: more corruption of the individual, more corruption of society, more corruption of institutions, etc, Which is it?

Societies where people believe in God make strong warriors. Societies where people disbelieve in God make cowardly warriors. This is the difference in believing in an afterlife and not, and this promotes all societies who at least believe in God and the afterlife.

Isn't God's wisdom amazing?
Evidence please.

If you believe this is your one and only life, why would you accept being appointed on the front lines?
That’s basically what bravery and self sacrifice is. It’s a shame that some people need to have the thought of an after life to act brave.

It’s not really brave or self sacrificial if you think you’ll just go to Heaven.

The only way to motivate soldiers is a strong belief in God and that there's an afterlife they'll be rewarded with.
I’m afraid your knowledge of human psychology is sorely lacking.

"Kill them all and let God sort 'em out" doesn't provide much motivation for peacemakers.

Didn't you read that one of the Beatitudes of Jesus says, "Blessed are the purgers, for they shall cleanse the land"?

And by this we know that both Communists and Capitalist military entrepreneurs (and other revolutionaries) have God's blessing.

Evidence please.

Two superpowers.

One founded on JEHOVAH, and the other founded on JESUS CHRIST.

Both founded on the Word of God.

That's certainly a claim for sure.

There's a place where people go who test that claim.

Their graves.

Yasser Arafat being a prime example.

King George III being another.

That's not even remotely an intelligent counter to what I said.

"The dead know".

And you like to claim you know as well. I'd call you dead, but you're obviously not. Though considering your history of necroing dead threads, I'd call you a lich at the least.

That's because you don't have the guts to test that claim.

You'll let someone else (like Arafat) test those claims, then do nothing but nod assent if he claims Israel isn't the Promised Land.

Ditto for academia.

They'll let their heroes test those claims, then shake their heads when a tombstone is placed over their graves.

Whether said heroes died actively testing those claims; or whether they died of old age.

And in no way am I advocating anyone go out there and test those claims.

I'm saying they should wake up and respect those claims.

Not fight against them.

Ac 5:39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
