  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If Worship on Sunday is wrong, then why do SDA parishes rent their churches to Traditional Christians?

So it seems Mrs White believed that people in other denominations were unsaved.
It seems to me that Mrs. White, to put a positive light on her views, believed that salvation was possible, but for only those who held to her particular teachings.

Now that I was remembering the beards and better hats thing, it was reminding me of the old GT board, before they divided it up so much. There were a couple threads where we made some cartoons of common posters back in the day. Everyone seemed to enjoy theirs. Not many probably remember the personalities of these posters these days, but some of the themes are similar!

Tall, if you see a person on the side of the road, does it matter is they are black, brown, poor or rich, or as the story of the good Samaritan gives us, of a different mindset or belief. You can see where I am going with this, the answer is evident. Now an interesting thing is that Ellen White had no issue with members going to Sunday keeping churches or they worshiping in our churches and she herself was invited to Sunday keeping churches to speak. I am looking to see if can find it, here is some of what I came across..

Mrs. White also encouraged some of our believers to attend the meetings of other groups with the intention of judiciously seeking to be a good influence on others there, whether laity or even ministers. Here are several paragraphs from Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 74 and 75:

Let some of the workers attend religious gatherings in other churches and, as there is opportunity, take part in them. Jesus when only twelve years old went into the school of the priests and rabbis at the temple and asked questions. In this temple school, studies were conducted daily, somewhat as we conduct Bible studies. Jesus asked questions as a learner, but His questions furnished new matter for those learned priests to think upon. Similar work might be done today. Judicious young men should be encouraged to attend the meetings of the Young Men's Christian Association, not for the sake of contention, but to search the Scriptures with them and suggest helpful questions. Had work in these various lines been done earnestly and vigorously after all our camp meetings, many more souls would have been gathered in as the fruit of the seed sown at the meetings. Let the workers become acquainted with the people and read to them the precious words of Christ. Lift up Jesus crucified among them, and soon those who have listened to the messages of warning from the ministers at the tent, and have been convicted, will be drawn out to ask for further information. This is the time to present the reasons of our faith with meekness and fear; not a slavish fear, but a cautious fear lest we speak unadvisedly. Present the truth in all its loveliness, in simplicity and sincerity, giving meat in due season, and to everyone his portion of meat.

You might also want to look at Evangelism, p. 562ff, where Mrs. White talks about working for the ministers of other denominations.

There are no Adventist representatives present at the liturgies of the churches I am referring to and in the case of the one closest to me most of the people speak little or no English, predominantly speaking a language which the local Adventist church has no one who speaks (I don’t speak it either but fortunately one of the deacons speaks English). So there is no opportunity for evangelism.

That said on one occasion in 2023 after attending a midweek liturgy at a Greek Orthodox church which I was visiting (not a parish I regularly attend) one of the congregants invited me to lunch, and I was surprised when we were joined by a pair of Adventists. It was basically an attempt to convert me and I would not have gone if I had known that was in store. Many Orthodox Christians have experienced this sort of thing with “missionaries” from other denominations as well as non-Christian groups such as J/Ws, Mormons and so on.

Yes at one time it looked like that. Little Lamb would routinely bump threads from years ago, so the joke was searching for threads over a year old.

Ah I see - I joined the site shortly before the pandemic but I got the sense that a lot happened before I joined.

Unfortunately for me, I'm not as wise as they were.
Well, here we are together, still not wise enough after all these years!

But there is good and bad to the forum. I have learned a lot from others here, and from studying Scripture and church history. I suppose opting to participate in a theological debate forum is always going to have its difficult moments, especially considering the importance of the topics discussed, and their applicability to us directly in a manner exceeding other issues. I tend to go in spurts posting here, so when it gets to be too much, I just take a break.

In general I try to do most of my study outside the polarizing realm of debate so I can more openly receive what God has for me. But there have been times in the middle of a discussion where I find amazing things I had not noticed before, and, even in the midst of debate, I am blessed by it.

And of course, we have to be living in the body of Christ, and sharing in the world apart from here to have balance.

My guestimation is that if one could put together some statistics on criticism, SDA would be at the top; receiving the most criticism on this forum. So much vitriol has been lobbed at us because we put the Biblical position above that of established tradition.

  • Forums dedicated to theological debate are by their nature going to have debate, and criticism of theological frameworks.
  • Everyone here, whether CC, EO, OO, LCMS, SDA, etc. voluntarily participate in this forum.
  • If you claim to be the one true church (or in the case of SDA, last day remnant) you will be receiving more criticism, and that is true whether you are EO, CC, LCMS, SDA, etc.
  • Probably in your particular church claiming that other churches are in the case of Rome the harlot of Revelation, and in the case of the protestant churches, the harlot's daughters, is going to result in a bit of blowback.
All have a right to advocate for their convictions. And if you are correct and the other churches are Babylon, then you are going to have to take the heat that giving that message brings. And those who hear will have to give account in the judgment.

But if you are wrong, and you are judging your Master's servants without justification, then you will also give account in the day of Judgment.

And even for those churches that hold that tradition includes Scripture, but is not limited to Scripture, they will recognize that tradition should not contradict Scripture. So we can examine Scripture (as well as tradition within context).

In any case, everyone joins these discussions willingly, as far as I know. Criticism may come with that. Let's pray for each other, as seeking to please the Lord.

SDA present facts from a Biblical and historical viewpoint (fulfilled prophecy, for example). If those facts are not the truth then let it be shown on this forum so all can see the truth. Where facts are concerned, it isn't criticism, but simply facts taken personally as criticism.

Right, then neither side in a debate forum should be offended when they chose to examine these things.

That's not to say there haven't been personal attacks lobbed from various sides, there have, but they have been addressed over time by the moderation team.
Yes, and they have a difficult task.

My personal conviction is that the truth needs to be known, and that as many as possible need to be reached so that they can know the truth. What truth? What is written in the Bible. If that steps on a few toes, then it's not me doing it, it's what's written in the Bible.

So then, since you are from a church who holds to the view that many of your fellow debaters are servants of God in fallen Babylon, and being parts of the harlot or her daughters, and others as opponents of truth, and folks like me as apostate people shaken out of the remnant, you can expect some disagreement. But let's look at Scripture.

The questions still remains why you would prop up the harlot daughters, however, by taking money from them to allow them to further their corner of Babylon.

Actually insofar as another member recently denied the Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox historically existed and asserted that we are Roman Catholics, and has repeatedly made irrelevant remarks to me about things said by “my Pope” and “my magisterium” which I was not aware that I had my own personal Pope or Magisterium, well, insofar as that member also posted in defense of the practice here, also insofar as one of the SDA churches was renting space to an Eastern Catholic congregation that is part of the Catholic Church under the ultimate authority of Rome, well, the whole position becomes stranger, and I would think traditional Adventists would want to put a stop to it…

And to quote OrthodoxyUSA's very appropriate tagline for all of us to remember--"Forgive me!"
