  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Right Conception of Sin.

Having a right conception of sin is foundational for right thinking, right living, and a healthy theology of salvation.
Today, many have shallow, confused, or overly permissive views of sin.
We all use the word 'sin' but often have differing definitions of that word.

What is sin? What is a Biblical definition?

1.The nature of sin firstly, is something willful, a transgression, disobedience, breaking of the law of God, a wrong choice. This certainly was what happened in the Garden with Adam and Eve. They knowingly disobeyed God's command to them.
I have found John Wesley's definition helpful, 'Nothing is sin, strictly speaking, but a voluntary transgression of the known law of God'.
There are 3 things to take away from this definition:
a) Sin is something voluntary, it is a free choice one makes against God.
b) Sin is a transgression. To go beyond the bounds or limit, a missing of the mark.
c) Sin is against the known law of God. It is something we know is wrong. Sin is lawlessness.

2.) The nature of sin secondly, is an inner depravity, an inner principle. We can describe it as indwelling sin or inbred sin, or original sin.
It is the root from which grows the fruit, sins. As the saying goes, 'We are not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.'

So, man's need is for both forgiveness for sins committed and cleansing for inward depravity.
The Atonement of Jesus Christ provides a double cure for our sin, both inward and outward.
'The blood of Jesus cleanses us from ALL sin' 1 Jn 1:7.

This is good. Yes, God not only forgives, counting no past sins against us while declaring us to be righteous, but also actually makes us righteous-as we continue to remain in Him.

And I think sin is sin with or without regard to the law-because man was simply created as a morally accountable being to begin with, with the "natural law" already inscribed into his conscience even if dimmed, obscured, overiddened, etc by the Fall, and God could never be ok with His creation acting outside of His will: murdering, stealing, etc, sinning, IOW. The law was given to identify and solidify such things as those as being definitively wrong, sinful-so there should be no excuse for man to commit them. Augustine put it this way:
"God wrote on tablets of stone that which man failed to read in his heart."

Some thoughts, FWIW.

The Moral Law of God is summed up by Jesus as love to God and neighbor. Thus, sin is to not show love to either God, neighbor or both.

Agreed. In fact, a teaching that I'm familiar with and have come to appreciate greatly sums it up simply-and profoundly-IMO:
"At the evening of life we shall be judged on our love."

I can't argue with that-understood in light of the gospel.

The core of sin seems to me to be a self centeredness that prioritizes one's own wants with no regard for the needs of others.

It is the opposite of solidarity.

Yes, self-love as opposed to God's love manifested in our hearts and lives.

I agree as well, it's the opposite of love. Love fulfills the law because love opposes and excludes sin by its nature.

And self-love is good and healthy-a gift from God- when it's in control. Out of control self-love, which Aquinas called "inordinate self-love", aka pride", is to abuse that good gift. All sin/evil is the perversion or abuse of some good since everything God created was/is inherently good.
