  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Colorado River, a lifeline for seven states, is drying up at its source

Ah so it really is just a political war of democrat/liberal vs republican/conservative. Thought so.
No, the facts are what they are, and humanity is largely responsible for the rapid climate change we're experiencing.

What to do about it, if anything, at the national scale is a political decision. What to do about it, if anything, at the personal scale is a personal decision.

Theres a reality here (some) people are contending with.

Why should party identification require detachment from reality?

In reality it's about the pitch that a Democrat run government will save the planet.

Im not convinced the D's are up to it actually.

As for my own motives, you should stick to whats on the page here and quit trying to read my mind.

I did a long mt bike ride up to 12,000 ft last Sun and it was absurdly dry for this time of year. I should have had to cross a bunch of snow fields. Instead it was perfect for cycling and terrible for irrigating downstream.

I will use this topic as an excuse to post a highly relevant pic.

Nice scenery - and nice bike. But yes, looks very dry.

Off topic, but what are your thoughts on those bars? I saw some article on them when they came out a few years back, but I haven't ever seen a set in the wild before.

Those bars are great tho very expensive. Just enough to take the edge off. But.... Im riding a fully rigid Krampus. Im not sure if the bars would be a useful addition to front suspension.

Its about the physical reality of climate in the west - which does not depend on what party youre inclined toward.
There's a heavily politicized aspect to it. And information that's cranked out to the general public is swayed by patisanship depending on the source.

Sounds like you're swayed more by partisanship than you think. Another angle that's used is to convince certain people that they're very scientifically minded. Smarter, more learned, more empathetic etc. Lots of ego stroking. Which is why they act snooty and snarky towards anyone who's not in the club.

We are talking about the measured rainfall, water usage, and river flows. Those are facts that are collected and collated. They are not partisan or even political. Deciding what to do with those numbers is political, but the science of the collected data is not. Please stop assigning political motives to everything.

There are facts and then there are the claims based on those facts. And deciding what to do with the numbers is usually the line of discussion regarding this matter.

It's kind of hard not to when the lion's share of those who post about manmade climate change here and elsewhere are obviously Democrat/liberal aliened based on their other posts. It's all part and parcel.

And just for the record I did not read the left leaning Los Angeles Times article in the OP because it's behind a pay wall.

And the OP talks about human impacts of the drought, but not politics. (The post was also made in the News section not in Politics.)

Like with the plot reading -- how is it our fault that your political movement has aligned itself with anti-knowledge and denialism regarding climatology. We didn't move away from facts, you guys did. Liberalism didn't make me accept climate change, data did. (I have a small advantage on the rest of you on the thread as I actually studied climatology 30+ years ago so I was properly aware of the data and models in the early 90s, back when I was a "both parties are evil" centrist/moderate. Politics wasn't part of my understanding of climatology then or now.)

I'm fine with your non-reading reason (I make the same protest about paywalls.), but the paper is owned by a billionaire who has tilted the coverage to protect trump. (Like with Bezos and the WaPo.)

The desiccation of the river’s headwaters is shrinking a critical water lifeline for about 35 million people and 5 million acres of farmland across the Southwest, from the Rockies to Southern California and northern Mexico.

Agriculture, by far the largest consumer of Colorado River water, will be the hardest hit as states are forced to implement water restrictions.

From last month:
Lettuce saw one of the biggest jumps in prices, up 16 percent in May compared with April and up 24 percent from a year ago. Like tomatoes, much of the lettuce Americans eat in winter is grown outside the United States. While there are a handful of places in the United States that lettuce can be grown close to year-round — including in parts of California and Arizona — those areas have also been dealing with water deficits, Thilmany said.

Again, it's not the facts or the data that's the primary point of contention. It's the conclusions and claims made regarding the facts and data that everyone isn't onboard with. Certain people see a chart on the internet and accept what they're being told it means and what the result will be. And then they account that as being knowledgeable on the subject of climatology and not being in denial because they accept those claims.

However what should be discussed about this other than bicycle riding and saying it's awful?
