  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone up for a chat thread?

I have beef and pumpkin chilli in the slow cooker today. Made with mince and loaded up with lots of veg, so I'm aiming for that elusive meeting point of healthy, tasty, and budget-friendly.... My daughter will not like it, but at least the adults might!

My lecture on Shepherd of Hermas was so well received that the hosts booked me to return for a follow-up next year. I told my daughters I'll take them to Vermont afterwards. We've got a map of the 50 States that we are filling in as we visit them. I'm at 38, the older girl is in the 20s and the younger is at 18 methinks.

Which bit of the Shepherd were you focussing on? (One day I'll get back to my abandoned thesis on the Shepherd. One day when I'm retired and have no children at home, maybe!)

This lecture was an overview. The lecture that is commissioned for next year will focus on the symbol of the Tower and they've asked that I go deep into the 9th similitude, or parable, as I prefer to call them.

Regarding your daughter's tastes, we used to have one of those little plaques in the kitchen which showed a woman in apron holding a large spoon.

She's saying "I offer my family two choices with every meal!"

"Take it or leave it!"

And, you know, that approach appeals. Unfortunately, I've learned that autism and sensory issues mean my kid will often go without rather than eat what I want to eat. I was never going to be the parent who prepared separate meals, but since I'm not prepared to live on what she'll eat, we've had to adapt.

US Independence Day (July 4) is next week. Now I hate mixing that stuff in with church. I enjoy our civil holidays as much as the next American but it's not got anything to do with Jesus. The church gave me instructions for a patriotic service next Sunday.

I appreciate it when my Rector gives advance notice of such things...so I can stay home. I am planning on not going next Sunday morning, myself. Forgive me.

And Independence Day is actually listed as a major feast in the 1979 BCP! But it's been controversial all the way back to the 1786 Proposed Book.

On this, the 250th Anniversary of our independence, I take for my text Deuteronomy 26:5 "And you shall make response before the Lord your God, ‘A wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous."

I'll probably use the Collect from the BCP.

On another note, I got to thinking I haven't seen Mr. Evans in a while (a neighbor of sorts). He would typically have stopped by to check on my planting, tomatoes and peppers and such. Well, he up and died at the age of 89.

Does anyone in here know how to best store bananas in a hot climate? Can they go in the fridge?

They usually last fine in this country just at room temperature, but this country is having some other country's weather at the moment....
