  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Democracies only last up to around 250 years before things fall apart. We are clearly in the fall apart stage.

We're tenting tonight on the old camp ground
Give us a song to sing
Our weary hearts a song of home
And friends we love so dear

Many are the hearts that are weary tonight
Praying that the war would cease
Many are the hearts that are looking for the right
To see the dawn of peace

Tenting tonight, tenting tonight, tenting on the old camp ground
Yes, we're tenting tonight, tenting tonight, tenting on the old camp ground.

That's part of a song from the American Civil War. The old camp ground in the song is a reference to the camp meeting grounds that were common then. People would camp together and have week-long revivals, listening to preaching that was often in the open. During the Civil War, they were often used as mustering out points and as camp grounds for troops on both sides.

Through the rest of the verses of Tenting on the Old Camp Ground, the listeners learns that they are camping there after a battle. There's a verse that goes "Some are dead and some are dying, many are in tears." There's a sharp contrast between camping on a site dedicated to the Prince of Peace and the war in general and battle in particular. That's a contrast already lost because camp meetings have fallen out of fashion.

I don't care if someone is a secularist or of they have the idea that somehow Christianity had no impact on the American Revolution and the formation of the United States of America: If you scrub Christianity from the American experience, you leave out what was once a vibrant heart of American existence, one that had a huge impact on the American way of life. It is one thing to forget something because it fell out of fashion; quite another to propagate willful ignorance.
