President Donald Trump last year dramatically ratched up the fee for H-1B work visas to $100,000, saying it would protect American workers from losing their jobs to lower-paid foreigners.

U.S. District Court Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston ruled that the fee violated the Administrative Procedure Act, which governs how federal agencies develop and issue regulations. “The Court finds that the Policy imposes a tax on H-1B petitions without the requisite delegation by Congress,” Sorokin wrote, contradicting an earlier federal court ruling that upheld the fee hike and kept it in effect until September when it is scheduled to expire.

In the Boston case, the states argued that the policy impedes their ability to hire primary and secondary school educators and to staff public colleges and universities, will stymie academic research and will lead to a decline in medical workers.

And they didn’t even secure a plea deal on the big scary assault charge they brought against Alvarez. Rather, he pleaded guilty to falsely reporting his truck was stolen after he rear-ended an ICE vehicle.

Alvarez’s felony sentencing was set for July 22, but earlier this week, Chicago prosecutors dropped a weird little motion asking for the sentence to be stayed because they have “re-offered” Alvarez a new plea agreement, one where he can plead to a misdemeanor. Oh also, the U.S. attorney’s office is “in the process of evaluating a potential legal issue” with the charge to which Alvarez had pleaded, according to the motion.

It likely goes without saying that it is uncommon for prosecutors to decide, after securing a guilty plea for a felony, to offer a lesser sentence out of the goodness of their hearts.

Judge raps Trump over bid to freeze Gateway tunnel funding: ‘Flagrantly violates federal law’

A Manhattan federal judge permanently blocked the Trump administration Monday from withholding federal money meant for the $16 billion Gateway tunnel project underneath the Hudson River, saying an attempt to do so this past September was “flagrantly” illegal.

“Defendants do not dispute that the suspension of federal grants flagrantly violates federal law,” Vargas wrote, later adding: “Indeed, other than the section headings in their briefs … Defendants make no attempt to justify their actions as consistent with the governing federal regulations. They have therefore waived any argument to the contrary.”

Vargas cited Trump’s own statements that he was punishing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), a longtime backer of the project, for his role in forcing a government shutdown that lasted more than six weeks.

“We’re cutting a $20 billion project that Schumer fought for 15 years to get, and I’m cutting the project,” the president told Fox Business Network host Maria Bartiromo on Oct. 17. “The project is gonna be dead. It’s just pretty much dead right now.”

POLITICO has tracked and analyzed the flood of litigation ICE detentions produced over the past year. The Trump administration has now been shot down by at least 464 federal judges, with just 54 — overwhelmingly appointed by Trump — ruling in the administration’s favor.

However, even a majority of Trump-appointed judges who have considered the policy ultimately rejected it. In recent weeks, the legal rout has extended to the appeals courts, typically a haven of support for Trump’s policies. The Trump administration is now putting its final hopes in the Supreme Court.

At the heart is ICE’s novel reading of 30-year-old immigration laws that every prior administration understood to apply only to people who had recently crossed the border illegally. That 1996 law required ICE to detain those border-crossers for the duration of their typically expedited deportation proceedings.

But since that July 8, 2025, ICE memo, the administration has argued that this “mandatory detention” applies to virtually anyone who entered the country without permission, no matter how long they’ve resided in the U.S., whether they’ve established roots in their communities, have spouses or children who are U.S. citizens, or have flawless attendance records at ICE check-ins or immigration court proceedings.

I often hear the term "constitutional crisis". To me, once the Executive branch starts lying to judges, ignoring court orders, has disregard for judicial ethics, while controlling the legislative branch whose function it is to place them in check. That is a crisis.

Maybe some advisor's from all the appointed yes-men would say if they are not, but then Trump overrides that anyway. So many changes are violating what was in place previously that includes protections. It has parallel in the changes from more democratic structure in other nations previously.
