  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who is "you guys"?
I'm not talking about you kids. I'm talking about those who participated in his first election. I guess when I say you guys, I mean the ones who have done some name-calling, and personally, I'd fight back if I were verbally abused.

That was when he called Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers.
My Mexican wife and I heard the whole speech, not just what you were focusing on. You have to admit he was telling the truth because there are rapist and killer illegal aliens in the US and some of those include Mexican.

The media keeps the rich and famous on for ratings, even Oprah asked him on her show. The media keeps him in the public eye, and I personally feel the early media attention is what got him elected in his first term.
This shouldnt be a big surprise but it's actually republican citizens who voted him in. Media outlets don't get to vote.

I think what got him votes is that America's "pathetic tough guy"/ racist itch got scratched but not many people are willing to agree with that.
I blame liberals for creating a monster. You guys all gushed over Trump until he ran as a Republican,
It's a hilarious habit for luke warm trump supporters to BLAME others foe their support of the man.

Why not celebrate liberals for getting candidate you support into power?
"You MADE me vote for him"...

Regardless, I ask this without irony....

then the vicious lies started happening. Naturally, Trump fights back and is unlike the Republican politicians.
Do you mean Trump lying and his critics calling him out and then Trump fighting back at being called out?

Obama didn't fight back and republicans were awful, awful with him.

Because he is a leader and man of character.

That's what is expected of leaders.

I hear the phrase "we aren't electing a pastor"...but you arent supposed to be electing a petulant child either I thought.

I don’t really care what you or your wife excused from his speech. That’s where the pushback against him started.

The Truth.
You don’t think giving a speech where you try to paint one group of people as the source of a country’s problems is deserving of some pushback? That’s not to be expected in your world? Just because you agree with his points doesn’t mean they aren’t bad points or coming from a hateful place.

Of course, we've operated on party tribalism for a long time, but the media exposed me to Trump politics.

A different time, we weren't as vicious as we are today. Tribal politics is awful. America would be a better place if we could find common ground.

Of course, we've operated on party tribalism for a long time, but the media exposed me to Trump politics.
So the media did it's job by exposing candidates to the voting public.

And citizens saw ALL of that and CHOSE to vote for him.

A different time, we weren't as vicious as we are today. Tribal politics is awful.
Trump was the president, LITERALLY right after Obama.

Democrats elected a black man of integrity.

Republicans got back by voting for a homo sapien sapien, Donald Trump.

America would be a better place if we could find common ground.
How can that possibly happen when a leader speaks the way Trump does?

Conversely, to compare him to Obama, what are some SPECIFIC things that Obama did that were so divisive?

I thought his run was a Democrat plant and the reason I backed Cruz, but ultimately, Trump won out, and I voted party lines. Right after the escalator speech, he was labeled a racist, and the name-calling began.
And rightly so, because his speech was xenophobic and racist.
The media keeps the rich and famous on for ratings, even Oprah asked him on her show. The media keeps him in the public eye, and I personally feel the early media attention is what got him elected in his first term.
It's the only reason. The "free media" on all of the "news channels" plus the rewriting of his image as "rich" by his (un)reality show.

Racism became popular during Obama, but the Trump admin is when all the viciousness was directed toward him. He is a racist, fascist, and a Russian collusion, then Trump retaliated with Fake News and his viciousness toward the left.

I'm not sure what you mean "Racism became popular during Obama": Who do you think was being targetted?

1) Trump made racist statements. Being upset that he was identified (not "labelled"; that is capricious) as a racist does not mean what he said was not racist.
2)The right keep using the word "collusion". To ignore Trump's impropriety through the events of those days because you feel a single word, a "conceptual benchmark" that couldn't have even been charge anyways, didn't get met, is not an honest understanding of his actions.

3) I would agree that in 2016, the people labelling Trump a fascist did not have nearly enough evidence to be doing so.

But I think that in 2026, when even historians and academics bandy about the two concepts together; where experts are writing books about the comparison, maybe it's time to take a more objective view of what he's doing.

He was some business guy who'd tried to keep himself in the public eye for 3 decades (when us non-NYers were forced to learn about him) whose businesses must have been failed enough that he stooped to a spot on a reality TV show.
Stooped? That show saved his bacon. He was a huckster who was always selling courses that he didn't develop or teach or know who did teach them. I don't mean his "university" but courses such as were taught all the time in NYC - how to line dance, how to use power tools (for apartment dwellers), etc. (since replaced with Youtube and TikTok). He sold real estate and business courses - they were not well reviewed.

Yes, stooped. Successful businessmen don't host reality shows. Trump had fallen to the point he was doing TV either for the money or because he was effectively out of business. His TV show hosting was a signal to me that he was washed up in business.
