  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Will Trump's resounding and definitive win cause Democrats to reflect?

And he was the only one discharged without any charges. Try again.
Doesn't mean he didn't wear a Klan outfit, like they reported. We don't know for sure either way and it's kinda hard to tell what goes on in the mind of dead man.

But it does suggest he did not. Let's be real. The only connection Fred Trump had with the KKK was being a registered democrat.
Actually, it doesn't suggest that. The article seems to have said that all of those arrested were wearing Klan robes. Fred Trump was one of those arrested. He wasn't charged with anything from what we can tell , the reason for that is unknown. Could be benign or not.

And being arrested at a Klan rally.

He did go to some length to distance himself from the Nazis - he changed the family name and lied about his heritage being Swedish rather than German.

Arrested in vicinity of a rally and was dismissed without charges.

Arrested at the rally which is something more than simply being a registered Democrat around that time - so not "the only thing".

Forget the democrats for a moment, what about people who love democracy?

Over to the guardian...
----

The Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at Gothenburg University reaches the alarming conclusion in its annual report, that the US is hurtling towards autocracy at a faster rate than Hungary and Turkey.

“Our data on the USA goes back to 1789. What we’re seeing now is the most severe magnitude of democratic backsliding ever in the country,” says Staffan Lindberg, founder of the institute.

Since 2012, Lindberg has led his small group of researchers in Sweden to become the world’s leading source for analysis of the health of global democracy. In their latest report, published on Tuesday, they conclude that the US, for the first time in more than half a century, has lost its long-term status as a liberal democracy. The country is now going through a rapid process of what the report’s authors call “autocratisation”.

“For Orbán in Hungary, it took about four years, for Vučić in Serbia, it took eight years, and for Erdoğan in Turkey and Modi in India, it took about 10 years to accomplish the suppression of democratic institutions that Trump has achieved in only one year,” Lindberg says.

US democracy is now back at the worst recorded level since 1965, when US civil rights laws first introduced de facto universal suffrage. All progress made since then has been erased, according to the report.

I think this report needs more attention and discussion here.

There is an autocracy forming, even if Trump is too old and will die soon, he has a system with supporters in place already that would continue the agenda of control. Any democracy will have to be fought for. But then with any victory with that you still would have government which can develop the same way, with the process of corruption that is everpresent. Trump had effectively deceived many for the votes he got and promises were not kept. This is a strategy that may happen again and again. Yes, really there are not enough people learning from history.

Democrats will reflect that promising to lower grocery prices, avoid foreign wars, and bring back manufacturing jobs will send the popularity of you and your party down the tubes when you don't deliver.

The only question is if the voters will remember these laughably failed promises or if they will be again lured by promises of things they very much want (but are hard to actually achieve).

Yeah, he actually did. The Covid inflation and joblessness subsided while the Infrastructure Bill put money and jobs into the economy. Not fast enough, sadly, so here we are now.

His 2024 win was under a 1% margin. States, the latest being Virginia, have passedo laws giving their electoral college votes to the winner of the popular vote in their state.
Michelle Obama is wrong about one thing. When they go low, we need to fight fire with fire, because their lowness kmows no bounds.
Some of my friends our very afraid that as Trump's unpopularity soars he will resort to putting the National Guard in urba n polling places, invoking
martial law and declaring the election fraudulent without a scintilla of evidence to that effect.

If you don't post any details to show that what you're claiming is right, then it's all too easy for someone else to post details to show that you're wrong.
