  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bulwark founder Sarah Longwell hosts frequent surveys with Trump supporters. And her latest foray reveals Trump’s fans have had it with the president’s failure to deliver on promises, however, and they may sit home in a huff as Republicans tumble in November.

“My brain is literally spinning with so much,” reports one Trump voting woman. “I think that he sold us a bag of — I'm not going to curse, but I do not like the way things are going, even with ICE. And border control for me was a very big thing. That was one of my biggest concerns with this election was cleaning up the country and getting these dangerous illegals out. But I don't like how innocent people, professionals have been incarcerated or taken.”

another Trump voting woman. “I grocery shop every week so like I know when thing when prices are going down and up — and I'm, like, he's lying. Nothing is okay. … I've never paid $9 for ground beef before, ever, not even the good kind. That is really, really crazy and getting very scary.”

“I really thought it was going to be about us here at home,” the woman added. “He made me feel like he empathized with the plight of what was going on with Americans and middle class and like below...

[Sorry lady. Didn't you get the memo? Empathy is out in MAGA world.]

... but it just kind of feels like [he’s] been involved in other countries and big corporations and all that since the beginning and not really focusing on us here at home and like real everyday issues.”

“Inflation's high … but he was supposed to help bring it down,” complained one Trump-voting man in the survey. “I think it’s worse now than it was when Biden was president, with the gas going up real high and stuff. plus they talked about maybe giving a stimulus payment to help with inflation and I don't think that's ever even going to happen.”

“It's these big corporations and things are benefiting and we're suffering because of it,” [another] voter raged, while assuring that she’s “all for capitalism..."

[The DOW's over 50,000! Capitalism yay! Surely you're not suggesting we tax successful capitalists in order to give socialist handouts to ordinary people like you?]

...I don't want communism and socialism. I don't want what the left wants. I don't want what the Democrats want.”

[Then, I'm not sure what your problem is. Capitalism is working as intended.]

I've been seeing reports like this for the last 10 years.

Just for fun look up "voters say they regret voting for Biden" or Obama, or Bush or...
True enough, there’s always disaffected voters.
The difference, (I’d posit), is that Trump voters tend to be a bit more loyal despite his various shenanigans, so that airing their displeasure at his performance seems “louder”.

And? What's going to be the result of that? They won't vote for him again? They'll become democrats?

The claim is plenty will sit out the midterm election as ever more radically Trump flavored candidates lose their appeal. IF correct this could have big consequences.

Except politics doesn't work that way. If Trump is as despised as we're told, then he'll have zero coat-tails, with "Trump" candidates on their own. The interesting thing is that so far Trump supported candidates have done well in the primaries, which argues against the premise of the article.

A bigger factor is mud slinging in the primaries. That's where you'll find most of the disgust. There the temptation is to say "A pox on both their houses" and stay home. It also gives Democrat opponents material for the November election. That can be offset by having Democrat candidates that people would be willing to crawl over broken glass to vote against in November.

FWIW, if a state candidate of any party ran on a platform of banning political text messaging, they would probably win by a landslide.

No, Trump absolutely maintains a core of die hards. And they are the most reliable primary voters. Its the less fanatic tier of supporters who are the ones proposed to be getting disillusioned and unenthusiastic, who also show up less for primaries. But the R party still needs their turnout for success in Congress.

No? Really? Every politician has their core adherents. You can see them when a candidate gives a concession speech. They're the ones who look like it's the end of the world. Everyone else, not so much. It's everyone else who might go "eh" and sit out elections unless there's a compelling issue, and that might not even be someone or something grabbing the news cycle. Coat tails are just that, and might nudge voters in one direction, but seldom in the other. The latter can happen on occasion, and the tip-off is when candidates in a party don't seem to get around to asking for an endorsement. In the end if comes down more to individual candidates.

I'm cynical enough to suspect the article cited in the OP is setting up propaganda (the article, not the OP) for when turn-out is lower in the midterms. Unless there's a huge state and local race that's a draw, turn-out is historically lower in midterms than in presidential elections. Whatever the outcome, I suspect that "disillusionment" will be bandied about, overlooking that midterm drop in people going to the polls happens across parties. If Trump endorsed candidates come out ahead in November, look for much to be made of the drop-off in voters. If Trump endorsed candidates come out on the losing end, look for claims of disillusionment.

It sounds like there's hope democrats will win the mid-terms over something like that, rather than democrats winning because they have good candidates.

Good candidates don't always win elections. Just look who's in the White House now.

-- A2SG, that's kinda the problem with popularity contests.....

Ds need all the help they can get. Good candidates is not enough given the structural advantages our system affords the Rs. So yeah for sure they hope R voter apathy pans out.

Say what you’d like about President Trump, but he beat all the women the Democrats threw at him...in the elections.

Sure. Though, one of them was in a technicality, but still...

But he was a good candidate. Really good at campaigning.
Well, good at riling up his base anyway. Regardless, these days, elections are little more than popularity contests anyway, so it's not about how "good" a candidate is, however you define that term, it's whichever one gets the most votes.

-- A2SG, well, except every now and then when the electoral college goes a different way....
