  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is anyone memorizing Scripture regularly these days?

I used to all the time when I was younger, but life got busy and I haven't been consistent about it for a long time.

I’ve been realizing how much I need Scripture in my mind throughout the day rather than just reading the Bible and then forgetting what I read.

Curious if this is something others struggle with too or if it's just me.

I have difficulty memorizing Scripture these days. However, I am of an age that remembers 'scripture in song' in the 1970's. We sang scripture and it became a way of remembering it.
I agree. I am grateful that long before I was converted, I had been brought up to "go to church," and this involved singing in the church choir. As a result, I got to know the psalms quite well, because we sang at least one in every service.

Hello @Nicole L, first off, since I see that you are a new member here, WELCOME TO CF

As far as Scripture memory work goes, I'm still at it, but not nearly as much as I was as when I was required to do it (it was required by the Navigators when I was going through their discipleship training). In fact, I do far more reviewing than learning new verses and passages these days.

It seemed like a LOT of work when I first tried it (in fact, the discipleship training seemed a bit on the legalistic side overall, especially at first, because there was so much work to do), but I'm glad that I stuck it out, because nothing has been more beneficial and as great of a blessing to my walk since I came to saving faith 40 years ago, ESPECIALLY memorizing Scripture.

In the thread title you seem to be asking for an easy/easier way to memorize Scripture. Is that true, or were you looking for an easy way to get going with it again (or both, perhaps)?

Thanks!

God bless you!!

p.s. - below is the final passage that I was required to learn for the Navigators (using their Topical Memory System). We all used business card-sized flash cards to help us memorize Scripture back then, but they've made the Topical Memory System into both an Android app and an Apple app now, and as much as I LOVE my little flash cards (they were, in fact, my most prized possession for years :)), I would definitely suggest/recommend using one of the apps instead (as it does make the process of learning the verses easier and quicker :oldthumbsup:). Oh, and we were assigned partners to do the memory work with, and I believe that that continues to be a very big plus (whether you use flash cards or one of the new apps).

Just FYI, The Navigators have been training their missionaries with the Topical Memory System for almost 100 years now, so it is a very proven way to learn and remember verses and passages :)

Psalm 119
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word.
11 Thy word I have treasured/hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.

I love that! Most of the Scripture that has stuck with me through the years are the ones I learned in song!

I remember a children's song called "66 Books in God's Holy Word," which is very useful for remembering where the books of the bible come. If I forget where (for example) one of the minor prophets comes, I find myself sing through the song to remind myself.
