  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

man, i thought i was the only one who remembered that game. Didn’t vanilla ice have a similar one?
I'm not sure about Vanilla Ice (other than the new game that just came out that he's in), but Michael Jackson had "Moonwalker" on the Sega Genesis... I sank hours into that game because it was the only way I could listen to his music. My parents owned it on vinyl and I was too nervous to set that up by myself. I did that when I wanted to listen to the Labyrinth soundtrack, accidentally dropped the needle, and scratched the record. To this day, when I hear "Chilly Down," it sounds weird to hear it without the skip.

They back out because they're afraid of certain people on the left going crazy on them. Probably as soon as their name comes up, the threats start rolling in.
Yeah. Being held accountable for your beliefs and actions is rough. Thoughts and prayers to all those artists affected. May they find artists who sing songs with the passion of those who sang the unrelated Belgian techno anthem, “Pump Up the Jam.”

Remember what "the right" did to Dixie Chicks?

And then the absurd irony that "the right" ended up coming around to their pov re elective middle east wars. This was a major maga selling point which you could see on display right here - up until the president went in a different direction and maga obviously had no choice but to follow.

I can't make sense out of either of those posts.

Right cancels Dixie Chicks and then ironically ends up adopting their position. And then ends up having to do another 180 when the president says to.

Is this something from 30 years ago that's supposed to still be fresh in my mind?

This speaks to their confusion. Oscillating from one thing to its opposite, then back again. They are searching for an ideology to cling to, one that will solve their problems.

The only thing that seems to really satisfy is a sort of scapegoating. The immigrant. The trans person. Etc etc. Something about this sort of enemy making really satisfies, which is why would be demagogues appeal to it over and over through history.

Sorry but this just keeps getting more confusing. Did you get my post mixed up with someone else's?

There's no need for an industry threat here. Just plain conscience or fear of organic consequences is enough for artists to dread the possibility of sharing a stage with this moral abomination of a president.
A conscience of a harlot is somewhat required in the business. To quote one of the mice from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it's a matter of "if it comes to a choice ... (of) just take the money and run, then I for one could use the exercise." Somehow I don't think Elton John was a Rush Limbaugh fan, but he performed at one of his weddings. They can preen about "conscience" and "moral high ground " or whatever they want to call it, but in the end it comes down to good ol' fashioned rank cowardice.

Oh, I doubt it's even that. It's fear of being marginalized in the business. It's fear of not getting work.

I don't think it's that. Really, the majority of those musicians are probably at the playing casinos phase of their career. There are literally two 250 year celebration events. America250 and Trump's Freedom 250/ birthday bash. Many of the artists said point blank they were mislead about the Trump part of it.

No doubt.

But also when I asked has anyone who's performed at a trump event been threatened, I got the answer I expected: Yes, several artists booked or considered for events affiliated with Donald Trump have reported receiving intense backlash, including explicit safety threats and death threats.

I don't think you can generalize from anecdotes. Or one anecdote in your case. But you could well be right re washed up legacy artists who aren't really creating.

You're saying you don't believe the statements the artists themselves have put out clearly stating their reasons for backing out of this event?

They're lying. Got it.

Considering some of the violent people who support this president, you're probably right.

Maybe if you quoted whatever statement you're referring to it could be evaluated.

Trump supporters are threatening those who agree to perform for Trump for agreeing to perform for Trump, sure.

Why is it always somebody's fault? Oh, a one-hit wonder from 30 years ago doesn't want to do the event anymore... It's not because they think Trump is terrible and don't want to be there, it's because the LIBERALS will boycott them, the LIBERALS threaten them, the LIBERALS blackball them in the industry, the LIBERAL media will lambaste them... If they say it's because of Trump and how they dislike him, they're lying to protect themselves from the LIBERALS. They ALL wanted to perform, then the LIBERALS made it impossible for them. It's NEVER Trump's fault, his policies, his behavior, or his general lack of appeal... It's the LIBERALS. The LIBERALS, the LIBERALS.
