Donald Trump has nominated the hospitality executive Scott Socha – whose company once sued to claim trademark rights to the name “Yosemite National Park” – to lead the National Park Service.

The nomination of an outsider with business ties to the agency he’d oversee comes at a pivotal moment for the service, which lost a quarter of its staff under the so-called “department of government efficiency” civil sector purge and which has been the subject of the Trump administration’s aggressive efforts to erase mention of historical events from its sites that portray Americans in an unfavorable light, such as regarding slavery.

[This is an obvious ethical monstrosity.]

[Socha's company] Delaware North is well-known in conservationist circles for a trademark lawsuit involving Yosemite national park. After the company lost a $2bn bid to renew its contract to operate Yosemite’s hotels and restaurants to competitor Aramark in 2016, Delaware North sued, arguing that the company held intellectual property rights to various names used at the park worth more than $50m – including the terms “Yosemite National Park”, “Ahwahnee Hotel” and “Curry Village”.

The two landmarks were briefly renamed, until the lawsuit was settled in 2019.

Yosemite ditches reservations, drawing huge crowds in a free-for-all​

  • Over the weekend, the wait in traffic to get through the park entrance was 1½ hours.
  • Critics are blaming the Trump administration for abandoning a reservation requirement that has helped control the number of visitors.
Near the summit of Half Dome, on the infamous steel cables hikers use to ascend the final stretch of bare granite, another traffic jam formed, trapping people hundreds of feet in the air, according to social media posts.

Over the weekend, the wait in traffic to simply get through the park entrance was an hour and a half, according to Lorena Calvillo from Fresno, who posted pictures and video of the traffic on Yosemite National Park’s official Facebook page.

And once she got in?

“Gridlock. Cars everywhere. People everywhere. No parking. No space,” Calvillo wrote.

Another visitor, Richard Smekal, posted about the conga line of climbers who packed onto the cables leading to the Half Dome summit. He shared a photo of the cables empty when he arrived at 9 a.m., and another taken two hours later.

“After I got down, I turned around and took the second photo,” he wrote. “The line was a continuous stream of people, barely moving — basically at a standstill.”

Yes, this is why they started the reservation system. Not just because of the gridlock and the park being overcrowded but, more importantly, to reduce the damage done to the park. With the gridlock, pollution near roads skyrockets and kills trees. Too many visitors overwhelm trails, causing people to walk across fragile ecosystems that make up some of the dryer and higher elevation parks.

Then again, maybe this is intentional. If you destroy much of the beauty and what makes the parks special, including by not having staff to direct traffic or control bad behavior, then it becomes easier to open up the park to companies that want to exploit the natural resources in the park. I mean, when doesn't an oil derrick improve the natural beauty?

If you can time it for spring or fall, that'll improve your experience. In summer, there's crowds, and in winter there's snow -- possibly impassable amounts of it.
