I watched Eurovision 2026 last night, a festival of magic, music and political drama that is a kind of barometer for European public feeling.
Bulgaria won with a pretty pop star from Bulgaria singing an adolescent song about uproar which she tried to spiritualize into something else. Israel finished second with a love song for Michelle. My own two countries UK and Germany finished last both receiving null points from the public voters.
Some interesting things that came out of the contest for me was the public support for Israel despite all the noise on the streets with pro Palestinian protests. Israel won the popular vote here in Germany
and came second in the UK after Bulgaria. The British public were the most astute audience in Europe calling the first four places unlike the jury. The bias in the UK professional jury is again duly noted. Unlike the British public they gave no votes to Israel and did not reward Bulgaria with 12 points either. Why Europe continues to hate UK songs is a little mysterious though as "eins, zwei, drei" was actually not that bad. Guess that could be a BREXIT thing. Although France and Germany also did badly with the public so it might be a big country thing. So I guess Italy is not regarded as a big country.
The songs included some really weird stuff, with some Romanian vampire asking to be choked by love, a half naked German singing about fire, a moving call to pray from a Polish pop star in a distracting metallic looking top, a man painted silver worried about his humanity in the AI age. There was a moving Albanian song about mother that was especially grandiose. The Serbian guy gave a scream from hell. An Italian guy sang about marriage and then one of the dancers french kissed another dancer on stage dressed as a bride even though that was probably not his wife. The Australian lady dazzled with her impressive vocals. A French lady sang Regard- moi in French but the public looked away from her. Croatian ladies sang a folk song, tattooed with symbolism in a pop style that was quite gripping. I found most of the songs fascinating and the special effects were superb. Overall it was a really good show that illustrated very well the state of the Western world.
