  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The United States of America is not rooted in Christian origins. And if one wanted to argue that, one could point to the founding fathers leaving England to get away from divine kingships. Or more commonly put, a nation intertwined with Christianity.
The original 13 New England colonies in America had founding documents that explicitly established Jesus Christ as Lord of their colonies. In time, and under British but also French Enlightenment influence, the Enlightenment rebellion against the Lord led some of the landed aristocrats in America who were leaders in the secret societies of the Freemasons and Jesuits and are referred to as the U.S. Founders to successfully carry out a bloodless rebellion against the colonial basis for government, replacing J.C. with what Israel replaced Yahweh with while Moses was on Mt. Sinai: "We the people" are the god of the Enlightenment. Colonial America had Christian govt that was overthrown by the Rebellion of 1789 and replaced by an Enlightenment-based govt. The consequences in time are now becoming obvious. The United States, as a government, was (to misquote Isaiah) born in iniquity and in sin did its Founders conceive it. We have now reached the steep knee of the curve of consequences.

In contrast, the countries of Panama and Belize, as counter-examples, state clearly in their constitutions that God is supreme over their governments. One can argue about how consistently this is applied at times, but the foundation is there. In the country of Belize, Cabinet (Ministry) meetings are begun with a prayer to Jesus as Lord, offered by one of the attendees, not a govt clergyman, and not pre-planned but from the heart. In Belize, the J-word is not forbidden from public discourse as in the USA through tacit cultural hostility; "Jesus is Lord of San Ignacio" is a sign posted at the boundary of the Cayo District seat. Can you imagine a prominent sign in the USA declaring "Jesus is Lord of Chicago"?

This prayer marathon of the U.S. Leaders attempts to reach a God who is increasingly distant from Washington, yet the Leaders suppose that by having a bigger and better event that they can somehow curry his favor. It is Malachi-era religion, and Yahweh's response then applies equally now: don't give me more facile religiosity; change your outlook and behavior on how you maintain the status quo of those in power, the rich who influence you with donations.

The Underdog of Washington, Jesus Christ, has said this in response to a 1960s American audience through Saturday morning cartoons:

In this world the headlines read
Of those whose hearts are filled with greed
And rob or plunder those in need
To right this wrong at lightning speed
Goes Underdog (Underdog) ...

Except that "lightning speed" for God can be centuries on our time-scale.

One more time. The United States of America is not rooted in Christian origins.
I really tried to salvage something out of the response to respond to.
The question to me is what gave birth to the US, it's origins. It was not Christianity.
They were not Dominionists.
They came to the Americas and established a rule that was the complete opposite of the Biblical Monarch (Christian) rule they were running from.

The American Revolution was not bloodless.

Yay! That's the US of A!

Plymouth colony, Massachusetts Bay colony, Rhode Island & Providence Plantations, Connecticutt I only have 5 New England Colonies. Are you counting Maine and Halifax? Still not getting to 13 or even close.

But that is on the founding of the *colonies* not of the USA.
You should consider using periods to break up your thoughts.

1. There was no "Rebellion of 1789". The US Constitution was created in 1787 and ratified in 1788 and it was not a "Rebellion".
2. The USA was not "Colonial America" in 1787. The independence of the USA was *recognized* by Great Britain in 1783 with the Treaty of Paris.
3. The rebellion against colonial rule was far from bloodless and was a full-scale war starting in 1775 that effectively ended with British surrender in 1781.
4. "J.C." was not running the colonial governments of 1775. The pre-rebellion governments were already fairly democratic and in many colonies suppressed by more direct British control.
5. "We the people" replaces royal sovereignty with the sovereignty of the people. It has nothing to do with religion. It does not make "We the people" into some sort of god.
6. Jesuits? In a land where the "Catholic colony" (Maryland) wasn't even controlled by Catholics? As for the masonic conspiracy notions -- SMH. This is bad history straight out of the anti-Catholic, anti-Masonic, nativist politics of the 1830s and 1840s.
The consequences in time are now becoming obvious. The United States, as a government, was (to misquote Isaiah) born in iniquity and in sin did its Founders conceive it. We have now reached the steep knee of the curve of consequences.
Misquoting Isaiah is an old tradition going back to at least Matthew. Think of yourself as being in good company.

You're putting up Panama as a government ideal?
Can you imagine a prominent sign in the USA declaring "Jesus is Lord of Chicago"?
No, and that is a good thing.

Perhaps I don't understand this modern Christian theology. I was under the impression that God was either (a) everywhere or (b) up in heaven.
It is Malachi-era religion, and Yahweh's response then applies equally now: don't give me more facile religiosity; change your outlook and behavior on how you maintain the status quo of those in power, the rich who influence you with donations.
Sounds like you don't think well of the church 'leaders' organizing and promoting this event.

Is this some sort of preterism or did I miss the return of Jesus in the mid-20th century.

I heard that Trump sent a one-month old video in which he read a Bible passage to another group. Hegseth also sent a video.
Perhaps planning to blow Iran's 90 million children of God off the planet took precedence? I know he repeated the threat live yesterday.
I listened to Roumie's speech and was glad it was fairly apolitical.
I hope there might have been a smidgen of discussing the many priorities--all involving human lives--that are not only neglected by the government but also the preachers in attendance.
And I probably avoided news about it because I can't face the inevitable disappointment.

Interesting considering many founding Fathers were deists.
Right and they had the opportunity to create any government they wanted. They chose to create a secular government.

Of the 55 delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, nearly all (about 51) were affiliated with Protestant churches - predominantly Anglican/Episcopalian, alongside Presbyterians and Congregationalists.

Only very few (like Franklin) were deists.
And yet they created an expressly secular form of government.

Yup.

Freedom of religion. Freedom from religion.

The citizens in a secular government can make their choice.

Simple, really.

One would think the President would have practiced the hard words before making the video or would have edited it to look like he knew the passage. Alas.

Actually, that was written by Chester Stover, W. Watts Biggers, Treadwell Covington, and Joseph Harris, and sung by Robert Ragaini.

"Speaker of the House Mike Johnson told God he was worried about a sinister ideology running loose in the land.

That was Sunday, on the National Mall, at a nine-hour prayer rally called “Rededicate 250.” Johnson had been given what he called the “humble assignment” of bringing the crowd “straight to the Lord.” He prayed for courage and patriotism. He prayed for the republic. And then he asked God to protect America from people who insist that the American story “can only be understood through the lens of our sins.”

Wait, what?

I thought Christians love a good "I was a sinner, but then I reformed" story!

Exactly. As the author notes:

Evangelicalism turns on the conviction that we’re broken people, in need of saving, and that repentance isn’t optional but standard equipment. The entire machinery of salvation, in that framework, depends on an honest reckoning with what we’ve done wrong. And not just so we’ll feel sufficiently guilty about committing transgressions, but because we can’t know where we are right now or where we’re headed if we can’t speak honestly about where we’ve been.

So when Johnson asks God to protect us from people who want to understand our story through the lens of our nation’s sins, he’s making an American exceptionalist argument under the guise of Christian piety.
