  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some good advice from Bishop Irenei for Lent and beyond.

I would argue that depends on the social media and how heavily its used.

For example, Christian Forums and other traditional forums are very useful for learning and interacting. Likewise, I’ve benefitted quite a bit from Facebook and LinkedIn (a business-oriented social media site). And YouTube is an absolute blessing in that it lets me listen to beautiful Orthodox liturgies from around the world (I’ve particularly fallen in love with some of the Orthodox churches in Russia and Belarus, as well as some here in the US, such as the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York and Holy Virgin Cathedral in San Francisco.

However, some Facebook communities, and the tendency of people to over-share on Facebook, and Instagram and especially Tiktok strike me as being deeply problematic.

I think you are both mostly right. The bishop is right about the direction in which we will gradually but inevitably realize where we must go. All of these technologies will ultimately enslave us, even the most pious and God-fearing, not merely by evil content, but by its forced intrusion into every aspect of our lives. But…. in the mean time, we have to live and survive right now, and even need to use SM to hear the bishop’s words. Our friend DL here is right that there is indeed edifying content and food for the soul to be found in the internet, though it will increasingly be choked by paywalls, blocked by ads and “geographical restrictions” (an oxymoron in relation to the global reach of the internet, invented by the wealthy to maintain control), outlawed as “hate speech” and other modern nonsense terms.

If there is anything that non-Christian Frank Herbert was perspicacious in, it was envisioning a Butlerian jihad against technology ruling our lives, however misguided he was in other things.

Personally, listening to people like Fr Seraphim of Iona and Fr Josiah Trenham have given me spiritual oxygen where otherwise I would have none. But I recognize that this situation is not going to last. (And Fr Seraphim has recently disappeared off the radar again, posting nothing new for an extended period.)
