  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Peter is not giving conditions for how to keep salvation -he is describing those who already have it. Audience description is not a salvation requirement. He says believers have been born again of imperishable seed (1 Pet 1:23). ""Imperishable"" seed cannot produce perishable life.

Jesus is the imperishable seed. Jesus is the living and enduring Word of God.

1 Peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

Galatians 3:16
The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.

Galatians 3:29
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Obedience to God's commandments is required to continue our spiritual relationship with him. John 15:4, John 15:10

He says the inheritance is imperishable, undefiled, unfading & kept in heaven (1:4). He says believers are guarded by God's power, not their performance (1:5).

Only obedient Christians are believers.

Disobedient Christians are liars, and they are not protected by God's power.

1 John 2:4
Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.

What is the punishment for all liars?

Revelation 21:8
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liarsthey will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Conditional eternal life is a contradiction, not a doctrine.

Conditional eternal life is a doctrine.

Colossians 1:22-23
But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.

Romans 11:22

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off.

The new birth comes through the Word (the gospel).
1 Pet 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring ""word of God"" (NIV)

Peter immediately explains what he means: This is the word that was preached to you (Vs. 25).

So in Peter’s own context: the seed = the preached gospel, the word = the message preached, the instrument of new birth = the gospel

Peter does not say the seed is Jesus. He says the seed is the Word - the gospel message. This matches the entire NT pattern.

Rom 10:8 ""The word is near you""; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[d] ""that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim"":

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[e]

12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
(NOTE: This is the imperishable seed in action.)

Acts 10:
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
(NOTE: What words? Everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins. (10:43). This is the gospel seed producing new birth.

45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.

47 “They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
(NOTE: Peter interprets it himself: They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have (10:47). This is regeneration, indwelling, sealing, new birth)

Acts 11:
14 He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’

15 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with[a] water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

17 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”

16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with[a] water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

17 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?
(NOTE: Peter explains the event: Vs 14, a message by which you will be saved, Vs 15, the Holy Spirit fell ""as at the beginning / Pentecost"" Vs 17, God gave them ""the same gift"". This is the New Covenant new birth. This is the imperishable seed. This is God's act, not human maintenance.

Eph 1:13
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory
(NOTE: Believing = Sealed With the Spirit. Paul gives the same sequence: You were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit. This is permanent, guaranteed, irreversible: the deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.

1 Cor 12:13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
(NOTE: It's Jesus Holy Spirit baptism that places us into Christ's Body. We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. This is Holy Spirit baptism, not water. This is union with Christ. This is regeneration. This is the FOREVER indwelling promise Jesus made in Jn 14:16)

Peter says the new birth comes through the imperishable seed - the gospel preached (1 Pet 1:23-25). Acts shows the Holy Spirit given the moment that gospel is believed (Acts 10:44-47). Paul says hearing that gospel and believing results in sealing (Eph 1:13-14). Imperishable seed cannot produce perishable life. If your interpretation allows the life to perish, it contradicts Peter, Paul & Acts - not me.

As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

Anyone who does not obey Jesus Christ does evil, and this proves that he does not believe in God.

The evildoer will indeed be put to shame.

John 5:28-29
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

Grace Evangelical Society is an organization founded by a man named Bob Wilkin who literally said in a debate against Steve Greg that a person can actually apostatize and completely turn away from Christ and begin worshipping satan and he will still be saved even if he never turns back to Christ. He actually says this at 35:54 in this video.

That is a weird theological position.

Indeed.

2 Peter 2:1-3
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their licentiousness, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from of old their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

The grace of God is what saves us. We are first saved by his grace when we believe and are baptized. Mark 16:15-16, Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 22:16

However, remaining in the grace of God until death is required to inherit eternal life.

Matthew 7:21
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Galatians 5:4
You who want to be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Luke 8:13
The ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe only for a while and in a time of testing fall away.

Unless these fallen-away-from-grace Christians repent of their sins before they die, they will die without God's grace. Graceless, unrepentant sinners are not approved to inherit eternal life.

We Christians aren't under the first covenant law (of Moses) because God's gracious gift to mankind, Jesus Christ, finished/fulfilled that law.

We are under Jesus Christ's new covenant law.

What did he say that we must do to inherit eternal life?

What did he say that we must do to inherit eternal life?
When Jesus was asked, by the rich young ruler, what he must DO to inherit eternal life, Jesus answered according to the terms of the question (i.e. How could I be saved by works?). The answer was to keep the commandments of the law. The rich young ruler should then have admitted that he had not kept them perfectly, which would have led to a presentation of the gospel. Instead, he claimed to have kept them, so Jesus pressed more specifically, in his weakest area, until he could see his guilt.

This is one of the main things that the law is for - to show people their guilt and inability to keep it, then they can realise their need for the Saviour.

The only law we are under, in the New Covenant, is the law (i.e. principle, not rules and regulations) of the Spirit of Life. As many as are led by the Holy Spirit, these are the sons of God. Yes, there are New Covenant commands, but they are not on a legal basis, unlike the law of Moses.

The new covenant law of Jesus Christ requires that his followers obey his commandments until their death, and then he will judge them "worthy" to enter/inherit eternal life.

Before the first religious covenant was put into force in the desert, people were judged according to God's natural law, which was put into force when Adam was created. This law will forever be in force. Adam fell from grace because he chose to please Eve instead of obeying God. He didn't "love God with all his heart." Genesis 3:22-24

Cain murdered his brother Abel because he was jealous that God accepted Abel's offering but didn't accept his. Genesis 4:8-12
Cain didn't "love his neighbor as himself."

God's natural law has always been written on every person's heart. Romans 2:15

Until the Israelites received the stone tablets and their first covenant with its 600+ laws from God, all people, including Adam, were judged according to their obedience or disobedience to God's natural law.

While the Israelites were under the yoke of the first covenant (Law of Moses), they were judged according to their obedience or disobedience to both the laws written on the stone tablets and the 600+ laws, which included God's natural law commandments.
Galatians 3:23-26, Acts 15:10

God sent his divine son to earth to atone for both Adam's transgression and all the Israelites' transgressions against their first covenant laws. Only a person who was both "God and human" could mediate a reconciliation between God and humankind. 1 Timothy 2:3-6

God's incarnated son, Jesus Christ, ended the first covenant by fulfilling it with his sacrificial death on the cross; his death also mediated his new covenant, thereby making the first covenant and its 600+ laws obsolete. Romans 10:4, Hebrews 8:13

Jesus Christ's sacrificial death restored God's relationship with humankind, and now God's saving grace is available to every person if he believes in his son (obeys him) and is baptized according to his son's commandment. Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16, John 3:3-5

This means that in addition to God's natural law, all people are now judged as to whether they obey or don't obey their Savior, Jesus Christ. If people disobey his laws, they prove that they do not believe in him or love him. The disobedient will not be judged worthy of eternal life. 1 Timothy 5:8, James 1:22, John 14:15

Jesus Christ judges every person who has ever lived by the following criteria:

John 5:28-29
Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and will come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

Those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ have eternal life already; our judgment is for rewards, not salvation.

John 3:36 (E.M.T.V.) He who believes in the Son has eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

This law will forever be in force. Adam fell from grace because he chose to please Eve instead of obeying God. He didn't "love God with all his heart." Genesis 3:22-24
Adam did not fall from grace, because he didn't need grace until he had sinned (he had done nothing wrong until that point); in fact, Adam started to be dealt with according to God's grace only after he had sinned (e.g. God clothed Adam and Eve, with the skin of a killed animal - a type of the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, on the cross).

Cain murdered his brother Abel because he was jealous that God accepted Abel's offering but didn't accept his. Genesis 4:8-12
Cain didn't "love his neighbor as himself."

God's natural law has always been written on every person's heart. Romans 2:15
Hmm...

Natural law is a Roman Catholic doctrine. The normal way to word this is to say that everyone has a conscience (some more than others).

Until the Israelites received the stone tablets and their first covenant with its 600+ laws from God, all people, including Adam, were judged according to their obedience or disobedience to God's natural law.
The stone tablets came a long time before Israel had all 613 commandments.

Unbelievers have always been judged either by the law of Moses (if they know it), or by their conscience.

While the Israelites were under the yoke of the first covenant (Law of Moses), they were judged according to their obedience or disobedience to both the laws written on the stone tablets and the 600+ laws, which included God's natural law commandments. Galatians 3:23-26, Acts 15:10
There is no such thing as "natural law commandments". They were commandments from the law of Moses.

God sent his divine son to earth to atone for both Adam's transgression and all the Israelites' transgressions against their first covenant laws. Only a person who was both "God and human" could mediate a reconciliation between God and humankind. 1 Timothy 2:3-6
Jesus atoned for the sins of all his people, from Jews and Gentiles.

God's incarnated son, Jesus Christ, ended the first covenant by fulfilling it with his sacrificial death on the cross; his death also mediated his new covenant, thereby making the first covenant and its 600+ laws obsolete. Romans 10:4, Hebrews 8:13
Correct.

Jesus Christ's sacrificial death restored God's relationship with humankind, and now God's saving grace is available to every person if he believes in his son (obeys him) and is baptized according to his son's commandment. Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16, John 3:3-5
God's relationship is with individuals, who are restored to fellowship with him when they are born again, repent and believe in Jesus Christ. Baptism is a command to be obeyed, but it is not a pre-requisite for salvation.

Jesus does not have "laws". He has given New Covenant commandments, but they are not on a legal basis.

Jesus Christ judges every person who has ever lived by the following criteria:

John 5:28-29

John 3:36 (E.M.T.V.) He who believes in the Son has eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

For as long as he believes/obeys/loves God, he has eternal life promised to him when he dies. Until he dies, he has hope that he will inherit eternal life. James 1:12

Titus 3:7
so that having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

There is no belief in God without obedience to his commandments. There is no love for God without obedience to his commandments. Belief must be accompanied by obedience, or else it is unbelief.

No person can be in God's presence unless he has sanctifying grace.

The fallen angels were created with sanctifying grace. They fell from grace when they disobeyed God. They were expelled from heaven.

Adam and Eve were created with sanctifying grace. When Adam sinned, he fell from grace. He and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden.

Jesus does not have "laws". He has given New Covenant commandments, but they are not on a legal basis.

1 Corinthians 9:21
To those outside the law I became like one outside the law—though I am not outside God’s law but within the law of Christ—to win over those outside the law.

Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.

1 Timothy 5:8
And whoever does not provide for relatives and especially family members has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

James 2:8
However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

Law of Christ:

Romans 13:8-10
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

By their fruit you will know them. Those who produce good fruit have been saved; those who do not, have not.

People do what appears to be "good" deeds for various reasons. Only God knows a person's heart. Jesus Christ will judge the motives for each of our "good deeds." Luke 18:10-14, Matthew 12:36-37

The people who are presently producing good fruit are being saved. Those people who haven't produced any good fruit at all or who are currently producing bad fruit are not being saved.

1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

I find it quite incredible that a professing Christian can respond to a verse of Scripture, by immediately fighting against what it states.

John 3:36 (E.M.T.V.) He who believes in the Son has eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

He who believes in the Son HAS eternal life. Do you believe that, or do you call the apostle John a liar?

We do not yet have the full blessings that accompany this eternal life, because we still live in our corrupt flesh; that is why there is a "now but not yet" element. What we hope for is the fully realised blessings of this eternal life; but, all those who believe in Jesus Christ have eternal life NOW.

The Greek text of John 3:36 is: ὁ πιστεύων εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον· ὁ δὲ ἀπειθῶν τῷ Υἱῷ οὐκ ὄψεται ζωήν, ἀλλ’ ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ Θεοῦ μένει ἐπ’ αὐτόν.
A direct word-for-word translation yields: "The [one] believing in the Son has eternal life; but the [one] not obeying the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."
Key translation nuances include:
  • πιστεύων (pisteuōn): A present active participle meaning "believing" or "trusting."
  • ἀπειθῶν (apeithōn): A present active participle literally meaning "not obeying" or "disobeying," though many modern translations render this as "rejects" or "does not believe" to align with theological context.
  • ζωὴν αἰώνιον (zōēn aiōnion): Translated as "eternal life" or "life age-during."
  • μένει (menei): Means "abides," "remains," or "continues to be." (Brave AI)

Is the believer residing in heaven already? Or is he promised eternal life if he believes/obeys?

Look at all other scriptures concerning eternal life to better understand John 3:36.

Fact: He must continue to believe/obey God until his death to receive the
promised eternal life.

Colossians 1:21-23
And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22
he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him— 23 provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel.

If the believer later decides to disobey God's commandments, he has
shifted himself away from the hope (of eternal life) promised by Jesus Christ's gospel.

We do not yet have the full blessings that accompany this eternal life, because we still live in our corrupt flesh; that is why there is a "now but not yet" element. What we hope for is the fully realised blessings of this eternal life; but, all those who believe in Jesus Christ have eternal life NOW.

During the Catholic Mass's and Orthodox Divine Liturgy's eucharistic rituals, Christians participate in the heavenly worship of God with the saints in heaven. This is how they have eternal life while they are still on earth.

Hebrews 12:22-24
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to myriads of angels in joyful gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous who have been made perfect. 24 You have come to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant and to the sprinkled blood that speaks more powerfully than even the blood of Abel.

Eternal life is not "residing in heaven"! Eternal life is the God kind of life (and it never ends), which he gives to every person, when he believes in Jesus Christ.

The one believing in the Son has eternal life (N.B. HAS eternal life; not, is waiting to get eternal life).

2 Corinthians 6:14-18; 7:1-
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will live with them
and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they will be my people.”
17 Therefore,

“Come out from them
and be separate,
says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you.

18 And,

I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty.”

7:1-Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

That goes against what Jesus Himself said:

(Joh 6:47) Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

He didn't say: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me will have everlasting life, but he hasn't received it yet."

I have checked, and the verb translated "has" is in the present tense.

RE: (Joh 6:47) Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

This "everlasting life" is the "Holy Spirit" who is presently abiding in him.

John 15:10
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

1 John 2:6
the one who claims to abide in God ought to walk just as Jesus walked. 1 John 2:4

Matthew 19:29
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for my name’s sake will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.

John 3:36
The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Belief in Jesus Christ cannot be separated from obedience to him.

1 John 3:15
Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

...
Stop telling lies!

John 3:36 (W.E.B.) One who believes in the Son has eternal life, but one who disobeys the Son won’t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”

It's not "has eternal life promised to him"; but, "has eternal life". Whether you believe this Scripture or not, you should not be lying about what it states. If you continue deliberately to misrepresent what Scripture states like this, then you will go on "ignore".

John 5:24 “Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

John 6:47 Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

1 John 5:11,12

11 The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life.

"Everlasting life" is not the same thing as the Holy Spirit. Jesus said:

(Joh 17:3) And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

He was praying to His heavenly Father, not the Holy Spirit.

I didn't say that belief can be separated from obedience. Obedience shows that our belief is genuine.
