Trappings of monarchy. I think American founders deliberately avoided that kind of symbolism.Meanwhile, in France, they host in the Grand Ballroom at Palais de l'Élysée
In the UK, Buckingham Palace has a rather nice event space
Schloss Bellevue in Germany...
The Hofburg Palace in Vienna for the Austrians...
Belgium has the Royal Palace of Brussels...
Spain has the Royal Palace of Madrid.
The Quirinal Palace in Italy.
The Belém Palace in Portugal.
The Federal Palace in Bern, Switzerland has a rather nice hall
All of which have exquisite event spaces (that are valued at well over anything that's getting spent on the proposed US ballroom), and that are attached to the official residence of the respective head of state.
Are you telling me that the "Tent attached to a temporary structure that looks like a greenhouse" is on par with the others I've listed?
We are the outlier in regards to not having a nice event hosting space on federal property attached to the head of state residence.

Do you think the Austrians are pitching a tent in the back yard or booking an event space at the Marriot when there's a big swanky state reception or function?
Even if we look to our neighbors to the North...
Rideau Hall in Ottawa is the official residence of the Governor General (the King's representative in Canada) and is where similar kinds of functions are held, while not on par with the other ones I've listed, it's better that what we've currently got.
But in an era when Americans are becoming increasingly disposed toward strongmen....... why not go full palatial?
