  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hasan Piker proves it: Nothing is too far left for today’s Democrats

Very disturbing that so many Americans justify murder.
I have no idea who this person is, or any clue about what he says, but he still has the same rights under the First Amendment that we all have to express his views however he likes.

I haven't heard a thing about or from him to date, and I don't have any plans to change that...but others can choose to listen to him, or not, as they like, and respond however they choose.

Very disturbing that so many Americans justify murder.

These are all positions the author attributes to Mr Piker (in order)

Sympathy with terrorists (Hamas).
Supporting "socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders".
Saying he "would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time".
Calling ultra-Orthodox Jews “inbred.”
Dismissing sexual assaults committed during the 7th of October attack by Hamas
Labelling Israel’s response to the attack as "still unjustified"
Called critics “ultra-Zionist pigs” and “Israel-first monsters.”
Calling the fall of the USSR "one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century".

What makes these positions "far left"?

As far as I can see, there is just one that would be obligatory/mandatory for anyone with "far left" views which could not also be a position staked-out by the far right. And that's just support for a socialist politician.

From Google Gemini:

Hasan Piker (also known as **HasanAbi**) is a prominent Turkish-American political commentator and one of the most-watched streamers on Twitch. He rose to fame as a broadcast journalist for *The Young Turks* (founded by his uncle, Cenk Uygur) before transitioning to full-time streaming, where he provides live commentary on breaking news, culture, and gaming.
### Political Beliefs
Piker is widely recognized as one of the leading voices of the "Online Left." His ideology is generally described as **democratic socialist** or **Marxist-Leninist**, though he often frames his views through a "socialist" lens aimed at a younger audience.

Key tenets of his political platform include:

* **Anti-Capitalism & Class Politics:** He is a vocal critic of American capitalism, advocating for workplace democracy, the abolition of private health insurance in favor of universal healthcare, and higher taxes on the wealthy.
* **Foreign Policy & Anti-Imperialism:** Piker is known for his "anti-empire" stance. He frequently criticizes U.S. interventionism and has been a staunch supporter of Palestinian rights, identifying as an **anti-Zionist**. His commentary on foreign policy is often his most controversial, including a 2019 remark regarding 9/11 that he later clarified as a critique of U.S. foreign policy consequences.
* **Social Justice:** He strongly supports LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, and reproductive rights. He often uses his platform to "de-radicalize" young men who might otherwise be drawn to far-right content.
* **Electoral Strategy:** While he is often critical of the Democratic Party—viewing it as too centrist or beholden to corporate interests—he has interviewed and campaigned with progressive politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar to push the party further left.

### Recent Context (2025–2026)
As of early 2026, Piker remains a polarizing figure in mainstream politics:
* **Campaigning in Michigan:** In April 2026, he campaigned with progressive Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, highlighting a rift between the Democratic establishment and the party's left wing over the war in Gaza.

* **Mainstream Criticism:** He continues to face scrutiny from centrist Democrats and conservative critics, who have accused him of anti-Western sentiment and antisemitism (charges he denies, stating his criticisms are directed at the Israeli government and Zionism, not Jewish people).
Despite the controversies, he remains a massive cultural force, often referred to as the "Joe Rogan of the Left" due to his ability to reach a massive, young, and predominantly male demographic.

Now ask Gemini why I should listen to this person or care about a single thing he says.

Who is he and why should we care?
AI has answered the first question, but so far, no one's figured out the second.

Man has opinions.
If you read the article the complaints ares not about freedom of speech. The complaints are that first that the New York Times giving this man a platform, and second that initially the NY Times ran with the headline “Hasan Piker Is Not the Enemy” and provided sympathetic commentary.

So? Freedom of the press is also guaranteed under the First Amendment. The NY Times, along with every other news outlet, is free to provide a platform for whomever they wish to. I have no problem with that. I also have no problem ignoring anything he has to say, and continuing to not care one tiny bit about him.

Why should I?

-- A2SG, he sure as heck doesn't speak for the Democratic party, or any of the rest of us who are members of that party....

So too there is nothing in the article questioning the freedom of the press or the First Amendment. The NY Times is free to give a forum to racists or murderers. What is disturbing is that give such a platform knowing there are people who will embrace such causes and knowing there are others who would love to get some coverage for worthy causes.

Sounds like you, personally, are disturbed by this particular guy exercising his freedom of speech, and that the NY Times is exercising it's freedom of the press to give him a platform. Okay, that's your prerogative.

I'm still unclear on how this reflects on democrats, or the Democratic party in any way, though.

-- A2SG, for my part, I continue to not care what he says or what the NY Times prints about it.....

Almost none of those positions were outlined in the article. The only one referenced is anti-Zionism.

Which is neither an exclusive position of either the far left or far right. It's not even an exclusive position for the mainstream of the left or the right of US political discourse.

He’s not “prominent”. He doesn’t represent any Democrat I have ever encountered.

The article is basically trying to pin this guy on the Democrats, but it’sa stretch because he isn't even a Democrat, he’s an outsider who spends half his time trashing their leadership for being too conservative. This guy is part of a new, internet-driven movement that doesn't actually have a home in the current system. It’s not fair to blame the party for a guy they don’t control and who doesn't even want to be one of them!

Next.....

Thanks for sharing.

On the headline for this thread: No, it doesn't prove that nothing is too far left for the Democratic party. That's still undecided.

Trump represents a right-wing (or perhaps populist) reaction of frustrated people who feel left out. The left-wing version of this is people like Pike (and Mamdani). One of my younger staff people has this reaction as well. Personally I think both approaches go nowhere good. But the Democrats haven't yet decided on a message for the future. The Republicans made the wrong choice. But in fairness, it wasn't a decision by party leadership -- it was forced by primary voters. The same thing is possible on the Democratic side. Leadership understands the dangers of the more radical left. But it could get forced on them by angry primary voters. I'm still hoping Democrats will do a better job of resisting.
