  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Fly me to the moon, Artemis II.

Already happening in this thread.

Lol.
I take great comfort that, no matter how much I politically disagree with a person, we can still sit in the corner of the room and quietly point at the moonlanding conspiracy flatearthers and whisper at each other "now THOSE guys are crazy"....

This is an awesome achievement but hoping that NASA will publish better pictures/ video than the ones they are streaming now once Artemis gets home. I am guessing they are limited by bandwidth from sharing the good stuff now.
There are some outstanding pics coming in now.

Ok, so, the biggest development I got is when I heard the astronauts talking early this morning.

The dark side of the moon is not dark at all. It's just as bright as what we see from earth.

Yes the side that faces into the Sun is not dark. The moon rotates once every 27.4 days. The side that faces the Earth always faces the earth.

Well...dark side is a misnomer. We see the dark side of the moon every new moon. It's the far side, the one we never see. The cool thing is that from earth, we see the edges of the other side as the moon wobbles.

One on me, I'm ashamed to admit, is the realization that my favorite photo from the moon, taken by Apollo 8, of the earth over the lunar horizon, cannot be seen at all from the near side because the moon keeps one side perpetually toward earth. That means the earth maintains more or less a constant spot in the lunar sky, depending on where you are. That never occurred to me before.

Yep, this is what I was thinking. I saw a diagram this morning of the orbit of Artemis 2 and noticed the so called Darkside is facing toward the sun. A bit of a head scratcher.

Didn't know the rotation schedule. That's cool.

Shouldn't we rename the rocket to Allah II as to honor the moon and not bring the wrath of President Trump down on us?
We shouldn't because this is a thread that should be politically neutral and there are a plethora of other threads designed for therapeutic Trump bashing that is available.

Awesome achievement and well done NASA for a job well done. Still waiting for the pictures.

Outstanding issues include the heat shield and the toilet. The heat shield being a life and death matter - so interested in seeing how it handled the re-entry. The toilet is matter of comfort, of less concern on a journey of only ten days than it would be on a trip to Mars. I was surprised that they jettison the sewage water into space while keeping the solid matter. On a longer journey I would have thought there would have been an element of recycling. Clearly there is an issue here and if they are going to have this spacesuit free experience of the flight it is quite crucial to fix that.

Looking forward to Artemis III but aware that Starship is not yet ready and that the schedule is slipping there.

On the first flight of the space shuttle Columbia, the ground crew had problems getting the hatch open after landing. Commander Robert Young, who had been on an Apollo mission, told Ground Control that maybe they should go back to water landings. Ground control "didn't copy" that, IIRC, and Young said no more about it.

Kind of hard to land the shuttle in the water though.
