  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone up for a chat thread?

I'm putting my binder together for 4 services. Mostly the sermons but a few little extras, such as the Stripping of the Altar and the Song of Moses and Israel. I'll be with St. Matthew's Lutheran from Maundy Thursday thru Easter. They got me a hotel room so I don't have to drive home in the dark through the National Forest in the evenings. I'm also planning which restaurants we shall eat dinner at. They've got a new Italian place. I'm fond of the winery and my kids do like the food there. Probably Mexican once. There's an Amish buffet as well.

Sounds lovely!

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend Holy Thursday, Good Friday, or Holy Saturday at all this year because I work all three days.

I will attend Easter morning, at least.

Maybe next year.

Ah, I see. We don't usually actually do the psalm responses to all of the vigil readings, so I hadn't clocked that.
It sounds like he's not doing a vigil though. Sunrise services for Easter are pretty common in the US.

We don't in my Church, either. From my experience, anyway.

You don't do the vigil at sunrise?
Generally speaking no. In the Episcopal Church at least it can in theory happen anytime in between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday. Most places in my experience do it on Saturday night. Like most Episcopal churches in my city, if they did one, did it between 7 and 730 last night.

Ah. That'd be a bit early for us; sunset here wasn't until after 7 on Holy Saturday.

You can do either, and some do it on Saturday night here, but I'd say Sunday morning would be more common. That's what we did.

A Vigil would have been foreign to that Lutheran church. Neither of the service books they've used in living memory even contain a format for it. In a hypothetical Vigil, I probably would have imported the ACNA text since their synod has full altar and pulpit fellowship with ACNA but then they would have been flustered because parts of the service would be in a different order and it would have been something new. I feel it is better to maintain tradition at these times.

So at sunrise on Easter day, they just do a normal Eucharistic service? Presumably with Easter propers?
Yes. Maybe a little extra music. Sometimes I wonder if the main purpose of the Sunrise service at some of the churches is not to get the cooks in and out so they can commence preparing the Easter dinner.

Speaking of Easter dinner, I've established a tradition of doing a lamb meatloaf. We don't need a whole leg and chops or rack are expensive. Ground lamb goes for $8-9 pound and meatloaf seasons up so very nicely when mixed well. My oven is broken (new one coming Friday) so I put it on the charcoal smoker and the results were excellent.

That day I watched the Cincinnati Reds, my favorite baseball team, on TV for a while. I told my kids they could take the remote and change the channel when I invariably went to sleep. Those 2 were watching me like a hawk to see when I nodded off.

Sounds wonderful! I never tried lamb, as far as I’m aware.

My latest Lamb trick is Lamb Strips grilled on the BBQ or hotplate, then on a wrap or flatbread, a swipe of Tzatziki, then the lamb, topped with some salad, then rolled or folded. It is kind of Souvlaki-based, earthy peasant food, though my son calls it a 'Greek kebab'
