  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Democrat U.S. Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware recently revealed that he prays for Republican President Donald Trump and does not consider him to be “my enemy.”

New York Avenue Presbyterian Church of Washington, D.C. hosted an event on Monday titled “Living Out One's Faith in Difficult Times: An Evening with Senator Chris Coons.”

During his remarks, Coons, who has served in the Senate since 2010, said he received mixed reactions when he prayed with Trump on stage during the 2017 National Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

“I said, ‘Mr. President, would you please stand with me? I want to pray for you,’” Coons recounted, when talking about the risks that one takes in faith. “Now why is that a risk at all?”

“And to the hundreds who called and texted and complained about what I did, I said ‘what part of pray for your enemies did you not understand?’ And he is not my enemy.”

“How many of us pray for Donald Trump every day? Anybody?” Coons asked his audience, with the senator raising his own hand while asking. “Joe Biden said ‘you can’t just love your country when you’re winning.’”

I pray for him regularly but not everyday. I would love to see Trump become a new creation and start acting a little more like Jesus.

Hmm, maybe all the prayers are canceling each other out because you and I are praying two different prayers, asking God for two different things, due to our worldly ideologies. Like watching a football game, and both sides are praying to win.

Wouldn't you love to see Trump become more like Jesus called us into?

We must all pray in accordance with God’s will! God doesn’t answer our prayers on our desires, only according to his will!

I disagree. This President most certainly is the enemy of all that has been good about the form of American government.

I think Trump is a plethora of things I can't say on a Christian board (or shouldn't say period). He has the personality of all the things God's Word tells us not to have (liar, greedy..... I could go on and on), And his leadership skills are slim to none. He is one of the greatest snake oil salesmen living. Having said all that, I pray for him every day because God's Word commands us to. Regardless of my dislike of him, I still believe he was chosen for "such a time as this." I believe we are in "end" times and God is ushering in this particular period. Maybe Trump was chosen to bring about calamities and situations that would precipitate such a time. I have had a million one-way conversations with God about allowing a man like this to even exist. I'm still going to continue to pray for him because our knowledge and understanding is nowhere near God's. He works in mysterious ways. The Word says God sets up rulers and brings down rulers. The Word also says we are not to question God on the purposes He has for His creations. Confusing as can be. But I'm still going to pray for Trump. P.S. My prayers deal for the most part with surrounding him with wise advisors and giving him common sense. Unfortunately, most of my prayers have yet to be answered - although a few of his unseemly advisors have vacated.

Of course, the same applies to this forum; we wouldn't argue so much.
This board gives people a place to respectfully vent. As long as the arguing stays above board and does not denigrate nor humiliate others, it serves its purpose.

I've been on some actual political boards, they are dark, very nasty places to be. I don't think the arguing here is all that bad, in comparison.
As for Trump, God used a lot of flawed individuals in the Bible, willingly or not. I don't see why Trump should be any different.

You're absolutely right. He used a donkey once. I just think our leaders should be above reproach and should exhibit tolerance and justice and a willingness to make this country better for everybody. Someone who does not openly tell you that he only wants one party - instead of everybody - to have a great life - someone who doesn't openly use profanity and insult people because he has no control over his emotions. I can remember when the two parties kinda/sorta worked together and kept their nasty thoughts to themselves. Guess I'm living on my own planet because those days are long over.

I do think he is the enemy of all that has been good about the form of American government. But I still think God has him there for a reason, and I'm just going to pray for him. I remember when I first started praying for him; the words could barely come out of my mouth. And even now, it is difficult at times for me to start my day praying for him. But if anyone NEEDS prayer, it is certainly him.

What is the point of this article? Praying for the president doesn't mean endorsing him or his regime in any way.

And I do consider him an enemy. That's just a sober analysis based on my own relational responsibilities. His policies actively hurt rmany people. It's astounding that the senator is in such a benighted position that he can press flesh with somebody like Trump, but that doesn't in any way make him morally superior or exemplary. Each person must live according to their own integrity.

Coons, an attendee of First & Central Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, Delaware, who holds a divinity degree from Yale, has often spoken about his faith and how it influences his politics.

In an interview with Fox News Sunday’s Shannon Bream on her “Livin’ The Bream” podcast last year, for example, Coons made the point that the Gospel “is neither Republican nor Democrat.”

“It does not say, you know, ‘thou shalt prioritize tax cuts over feeding the hungry.’ It does not say, you know, ‘thou shalt put at the top of your list this concern or that concern,’” Coons told Bream.

“There are 2,000 references directly in Scripture to the poor and to the widow and the orphan and the refugee. And it is what Christ focused on, in reading a passage from Isaiah 61 in his first sermon.”

Didn't know that about Coons, but now that I do, I respect him and his opinions (at least the few opinions I now know he holds). Glad he is willing to put politics aside and just follow the teachings of the gospel.

We folks are always puzzled about Trump's behavior b/c it really is something quite unique. He fights back, torches the media, runs circles around him. He is not allied with any party. As he has little conscience he is able to execute the law. Indeed some of these changes were needed in society. Did some online research on this. We know he has this maligant narcissism & it's a DSM disorder. That is part of a bigger pict & that is antisocial personality disorder & most of his was fashioned by the way his parents raised him. I do think there are some inbalances in his neurotransmitters as well. Why has not any family member intervened? We don't know. Some people luv the tough guy tussle but others would prefer more finesse. It's easy to see he has no loyalty to anyone but himself. As quickly he gravitates to someone, he then tosses then overboard. He is the ultimate corporatist. The thing with his AI push is really to eliminate labor b/c it costs money. It may awaken a leviathan. Why does he hate Europe so much? Don't know. They're people like you & me. Now he is pretty tough on crime but also shows some capacity for wanting to pardon. He does not think things thru esp his responses. The remark on Mueller leaves us all aghast. Remember Mueller cleared him. Mueller did not hold the same animosity that others hold for him. Trump wants a factory on every corner. I don't. Reminds me of what our tour guide warned when I was in Berlin. He does not value open space, the American landscape. No advocacy for the fine arts. There is illumination in the arts. On energy it was important to push forward with fuel that is energy dense so he changed direction. But I don't think it was necessary to take apart projects already in the building process & then to waste lots of money on lawsuits. He could have accomodated both but using market forces. Clearly he has never read a science book. He did have to attack some social things. Clearly Roe v Wade does belong in the states. The gender ideology is not normal. It's a psych disease. He is taking apart cartels & trying to rid the world of some terrorist regimes. One less problem is one less problem. God indeed does use pupils in unusual ways. There is some over the top stuff with the Christian nationalism. I know. This side is good, the other side is bad. As they try to portray the Bible, they simply politicize it in their image, not God's image. Basically what I see & this will be a fascinating dissection for years to come, is Trump indeed has a very severe psychological disorder & it's harmful. At the heart is he is not able to cultivate any sense of relationship with his fellow man, there is no nurturing rod nor is there true intimacy. It's wanting. He gets in his own way. The whole theater is toxic to most. Takes all the oxygen out of the room. Some are real sycophants & that's not healthy; it's passive. I pick out what's good & bad. Overall, I find it healthier to go sit on the back deck wrapped in a blanket watching the sunset, curled up with a good novel & a cup of coffee. Life is too short to engross oneself with his daily antics. It is simply not healthy for any of us.

Sad thing is that he could have done great things had he not aligned himself with just one party and instead said he was working for all Americans. Not all his policies were bad ideas. Take the border - instead of pushing agents to be Uber Tough on immigration, how about a little more decency and humanity. But when you wrap up everything with that amount of anger and hatred, it turns people off. Like him or not, he is a great salesman and could have had a number of democrats agreeing with a good deal of his policies, if his language was cloaked in softer, more palatable, more assuring tones instead of swagger and bravado. Generally, when people come at you with 'I'm the toughest, smartest, greatest in the room," you sit back, have a drink and cheer for them to fall flat on their face. He comes across as a bully and most people want bullies fo fall.

Continued below.
Spiritual terminology is built on Light/darkness with the knowledge of God's Holy Character as the Light (Agape) and darkness depicting ignorance. There's no risk in praying for others in that objective semantic framework because the enemy is the spiritual power of darkness. Objectively, we therefore pray for our enemies because they are misled even as we were, and this is the same as loving others as oneself.

The political divide for the Christian with eyes to see, is based on NOT wanting someone wielding power over our country, who is blind, full of darkness.
