Elizabeth Warren was applauding it at the SOTU. Our choices are:

Higher earners pay for it. [smiley face]
Everyone pays for it, so we are effectively funding it ourselves with our own taxes. [quizzical face]
Nobody pays for it. It just increases deficits and debt. [frowny face]

So do you guys have some sort of vested interest in making your political opponents bitter and more resistant to ideas that the populist-left has advocated for, for decades?

When some folks from across the aisle have economic populist initiatives pitched to them in way that they'll actually be receptive to it, by all means, call them hypocrites and attach the toxic "socialism" word to it so they'll go back to hating the idea. Brilliant strategizing! After all, the most important thing is being able to tell them "I told you so", and try to make them bend the knee to the people they find insufferable for non-economic reasons. That'll work great in 2028.

Reminiscent to when Trump recently backed off of the threats against Iran, and a bunch of left wingers were quick to pounce with the "TACO Trump" jabs... it's like "what? do you want to goad people into supporting a war with Iran just to spite you??"

There's a difference between pointing out an inconsistency, and pointing one out that turns the other side off when they were on the cusp of being on your side.

As an example of what I'm talking about:

A person on the left pointing out that a lot of the pro-life people oppose the policies that would reduce unplanned pregnancies and economic policies that would make unplanned parenthood more approachable... A perfectly valid call-out.

vs.

People on the right being increasingly receptive to paid family leave and certain social safety nets because it came from a messenger they don't find annoying and obnoxious, and people on the left pouncing saying "Gee, that sounds like redistribution, I thought you guys hated that???" just to needle them.


Readers digest version: Don't actively insult and goad people when they're in the process of moving toward your position.

Another example of when this happened is when Trump expressed support for raising the gun buying age and supporting red flag laws. People on the left rushed to point out hypocrisy rather than welcome the idea that the other side was coming around, and that only served to re-galvanize them into their previous position.



To use an example going in the other direction...

If someone on the far left told me "yeah, crime is getting pretty bad, we need to have an increased police presence in these particular neighborhoods", is it going to be productive if I said "Well well well, I thought you hated cops, what happened to all that ACAB and defund the police talk??? Sounds like you're a hypocrite!"
