In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's possible that the hospital ship is sent to help greenlands sled dogs, which have been suffering from the unseasonably high temperatures preventing the use of sleds in many places. The dogs might benefit from psychological support and perhaps education in a different field of work.

We should make it a demonstration of what the Greenlanders can expect to experience upon becoming subject to the US. Welcome them on board, treat them with no mention of cost then later smack them with large bills for care.

What I really don't get is that when Trump says something truly galactically idiotic like this then there are so many people trying to spin it so that it sounds like a reasonable suggestion.

I mean, you can back the guy up as far as you like, but there must be a time when the only reasonable response would be: 'Well, that doesn't sound like a great idea. Buy hey, maybe his blood sugar was low or something.'

I didn't vote for our state premier. But do you want me to list the things that he's done that I'm really pleased about? And I did vote for our Prime Minister, but I can give you a reasonably long list of things that he's done that I most definitely don't like. Sometimes you have to give credit to the people that you didn't vote for. And sometimes you have to criticise those you do support who did get your vote.

Isn't this entirely normal?

They wouldn't prevent it from docking or stop people going there. Even if they did I don't know how feasible it would be to anchor in international waters either (I don't know the depths and length of anchor chains), my guess is that only a subset of places in international water around Greenland can be reached by the anchor chains. I think the sea is at it's most shallow along the northeast coast, that is also where the ice is.

The weather is also a big hindrance for a significant portion of the year, only the southwest coast is routinely accessible by boat. Then you are closish to Nuuk anyway. Sea Ice Today | National Snow and Ice Data Center

Open question are any of the US hospital ships built to any ice classification standard?
The two Mercy-class hospital ships are 1980s conversions of 1970s supertankers - I don't think they're rated for ice at all

Hospital Ship USNS Mercy Departs Alabama for Greenland? West Coast? Mission Remains Unclear

The 1,000-bed ship had been expected to return to the West Coast for a scheduled $90 million maintenance period with Vigor Industrial in Portland beginning in March. A Navy spokesperson said the Alabama yard period addressed urgent drydock repairs tied to a ballast tank failure and was separate from the upcoming regulatory docking and inspection work.

The departure comes following yesterday’s Wall Street Journal reporting that U.S. officials have not issued any orders to send a hospital ship, including USNS Mercy, to Greenland, despite President Donald Trump’s social-media claim that one was “on the way.”

Any diversion to Greenland would be complex. According to Mercogliano, Mercy would first need to embark medical personnel, supplies, and an aviation detachment — likely in Norfolk — requiring reserve activation or civilian staffing.

More fundamentally, the ship is a converted oil tanker without ice strengthening and has never operated in Arctic waters.

Not to mention their healthy low fat diet.

Forgien aid is so very important... until Trump extends it.
It's important for poor countries. But Greenland is fine. But Trump seems to not care about the poor getting medical attention. Since he takes money out of America programs. And waist it on countries, that don't need our help. Because he wants to take them and ruin their culture and medical and life styles.

Given that Greenlanders are included as part of Denmark's universal healthcare system, perhaps its they who should be sending a hospital ship to America - where it can provide much needed medical care for those uninsured 2nd class American citizens that President Trump and the Republicans have abandoned!
You haven't done your homework. Greenlanders don't get the same Healthcare as Denmark. They suffer early deaths, and they lack Healthcare.

No, they do have access to the healthcare in Denmark proper when it's needed. The cause of lower average lifespan is from all reports due to accidents (living in the north, yes, the environment is more dangerous) and suicides. I doubt your magical hospital ship has the capability to bring back the dead. Improvements can be made? Heck yeah, in every system. But let's not pretend that this hospital ship thing is anything but a stupid idea and just a sign that Trump is still as obsessed with Greenland as before.
