  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Preface: I want to frame my observation in a proper Christian context. I am not claiming to be totally correct in the instances I reference. Just that, honestly, it appears to me that much of our ‘Christian’ political passions have an underlying self serving purpose. Revelations 3:16. “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.” Warnings to the church from the Spirit about the intensifying evil fostered by apathy. As has been said also in the secular world in a summary of Edmund Burke’s philosophy, ‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing’. Or by MLK in a letter from jail, “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.” I believe the passions of today’s Christian politics often are driven by that ageless self serving apathy. Take our stand against DEI or immigration or welfare fraud or fossil fuel reduction. Take a stand for voter ID. Those are truly cost free passions. We get to retain our appearance of good will at no price.

I take a stand against using the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth in vain. I condemn Christian Nationalism as it poisons the well of "living waters" of our Savior. It corrupts His Gospel of truth. His command of spreading His Good News to the harvest has been devistated by charlatans who claim His mandate is spread through the doctrines of men. As far as politics, it is of this world and therefore not of God.
Thanks for sharing.
Be blessed.

Remember:
"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." — Matthew 7:13-14

Thank you for the comment. I certainly can't fault you for abstaining from politics. Especially in today's poisonous climate. It's sad to see so many pulled into the evil side of it, using scriptures to disguise their fear and loathing. You have done well in what you say. So also, I offer, be blessed.

Time is allowing politics to show its real colors especially in the use of language.

Illinois Democrat tries to bleep her way through a tough Senate primary with a new expletive-laden anti-Trump ad
You are so right. And I will begin to hope that the public will begin arguing for the restoration of civility. And I will only start to believe that when every instance of criticism includes an example from both sides of the aisle. Until then it's just finger-pointing.

I share your cynicism. It would be great if common sense would prevail however unlikely. More likely is the unending damage to the civil order will eventually degrade humanity to the point that we can't ignore it or blame it on this group or that group. Then we will see if humanity turns to tyranny to stamp out all dissent, or turns to compromise, problem solving and charity. I'm not optimistic.
