  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I recall when my dad was still alive we would go and fish in Florida all the time. He had bought himself a rather expensive fishing pole (which, to be honest, I don't know why he did).

While we were fishing under the Florida Causeway one time his pole was eaten by a manatee! He and I both witnessed it. Having now lost his expensive pole he was as mad as hornet!

I don't know much about manatees to be honest, except that they live in Florida I think. I don't know much about their diet and what they eat, but this scenario tells me that if they are hungry enough they might try to eat something artificial. As gross as that sounds.

If fishing considered a sport or is it just more of a recreational activity?

Have any of you ever fished before?

The sport aspect of it is the skill required to succeed. The right lures or baits for the right fish. The time of day. The weather. A lot goes into knowing how to catch fish. Most of us learn from each other or through study and trial and error. The allure (pun intended) is that you never know what kind of fish you're going to catch or how big.

My father loved fishing and took my brother and I fishing a lot throughout our childhood. My brother loves fishing, but it never took with me. I enjoyed it because my father enjoyed it. Both are content to catch fish for the enjoyment of catching them, then letting them go. I never looked at it that way. If I was going to spend time fishing I was going to keep the fish and eat them; that was the whole point to me.

My father and brother have lost poles over the years. New ones and old ones alike. My father always bought the cheap Zebco poles, which did the job just fine. I would think if a manatee ate a pole it would be life-threatening.

I haven't had a fishing license since the mid-90's. I've gone out with my brother many times, but he is the one fishing. I'm just there to be out in nature, enjoy the boat ride (if we use one) and spend time with my brother.

My brother pulls in enough fish for a few fish fries every year. He cleans them and freezes them until he wants to have a fish fry. He does well.

If I weren't eating vegetarian, I would consider going fishing to supplement my food, but it isn't necessary (yet). I live next to a river and have a large lake nearby, as well as ponds all around.

People make jokes about a local river, glowing fish and the like, because of pollution. It was worse in the 70's, but there is still pollution.

For me, pollution is a concern. If you buy a license in my state the booklet you get gives guidelines of how many fish you should eat in a week (by type), because of pollution. This alone should be an indicator that it is a health risk to eat fish because of pollution. It is just common sense to me.

I eat vegetarian because of the risks involved with eating meat. Pollution being one of the factors.

You do have people in the uk that do it as a sport. I remember a fellow brother taking me fly fishing. It was a wonderful time, even just watching him fish, the smoothest action I've ever seen, me on the other hand i was getting in all sorts of tangles , but really enjoyed it i pray one day i can get rod ect and start going outIn the UK, fly fishing is a popular sport, and I had the opportunity to experience it firsthand with a fellow enthusiast. It was an incredible experience watching him fish; his casting technique was exceptionally smooth. While I struggled with tangles, I still relished the experience. I am determined to get my own rod and start fly fishing regularly god willing

Once or twice a long time ago. It’s fun
I don’t think it’s a sport. I think of sport as athletic activity. But it’s good to fish anyways. Did you know some of the 12 Jesus picked were fishermen?

I went fishing once when I was a kid off the coast of San Diego. A big wave came up and rocked the catamaran I was on and I dropped the fishing pole into the mighty blue Pacific. That was the the last time I ever went fishing. Come to think of it I don't even like to eat fish other than an occassional tuna sandwich. :D

It’s considered a sport and a recreational activity and hobby. There are tournaments. My husband is an avid fisherman. I’ve fished often myself.

I have only once, over 20 years ago.

Do you fry the fish you catch? :)
