  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What now? The SCOTUS reached into the Trump tool bag, and removed the only tool as in hammer the Trump admin had.
Really, it reminds me of someone taking the car keys away from someone obviously incapacitated. They saved Trump from Trump.

Well, all Trump has to do is to get Congress to make his tariffs into law. Considering how popular his tariffs are, that shouldn't be any problem, right? I can just imagine lawmakers scrambling to put the bills together now. Unless maybe they have anything else to do.

Trump and Bessent said previously they have a workaround on the tariffs. Bessent thought it would be a split decision, that some tariffs would be allowed. So will they try some other outdated laws to justify continuing the tariffs? Since they will likely have to pay back billions of these tariffs you have to think there is some pause to their actions? Better raise revenue another way to fix the gaping budget hole in a slowing economy. The sad thing is that many producers will not lower their prices. So the prices will stick in many cases, making the consumer still worse off, for nothing. All that negotiation too down the drain, except for the gold bar and rolex from Switzerland. The investment Trump alleged, the pandering of other nations. Even worse, Trump plundered all the goodwill the USA had built up overseas and with U.S. minority voters. The GOP is going to hurt for some time. Too bad that Maga tried to go too radical because for a time the momentum was clearly there.

A billion dollars says that, if Trump even makes an attempt to comply with this, he will create a fund, like "Save Small Business Fund", that will be administered by a board\committee of which he will be the chair to disperse the refunds to qualifying businesses where the deciding person will be Trump. Completely coincidentally the businesses that will qualify will be those owned\operated by his donors or family. He may also throw a bone to "regular people" in the form a some kind of measly tax credit or refund. I'm thinking $2000.

150 more days of uncertainty and chaos.
How can other countries make plans for trade with the US, or major importers make decisions on manufacturing, or shipping, railroad and trucking companies make decisions on the supply chain when not only do they not know what in heaven's name the situation is going to be even tomorrow, let alone in a month's time, but when Trump himself has no idea what he's doing!

The case was never about the tariffs themselves. I personally see tariffs as a tool that can and sometimes should be used. The problem was the President used an emergency order justification that wasn’t supported by the law Congress passed.

The decision wasn’t a surprise to me. The surprise was I expected it to be a 7-2 decision and it was only 6-3. Which means the conservatives split 3-1, with Kavenaugh joining the 2 justices who have lost themselves in the populist movement. I am interested in how he reached the decision to join them.

It seems the admin went with the predictable approach, which was to leverage an EO to issue a "temporary" tariff to replace the ones the court struck down, meaning to challenge it, it'll have to be challenged in court and work it's way up the judicial branch again I'm guessing.
The way I understand it, the new tariffs are under a law that he can use, however they automatically expire in 150 days unless Congress authorizes them. I beleive that was always a legitimate option, but one he didn’t use because control doesn’t stay with the Executive branch. So doubtful this will end up in court unless he tries to do something like after 151 days he imposes them again.

Of course, I could be wrong on that.
