  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

People who dedicate their lives to study the Bible, how far do they get when it comes to knowledge?

I know this will be dependent on when they started, and how old they go to live, time dedicated to studying, and also how fast they can absorb information, some people are information sponges.

If I at 28 years old decided to study the Bible full, time what can I expect on how much information I will acquire by the time I reached age 70? Probably still not enough to know everything.

Ever since I became a believer at age 20, It has been 8 years now time flies, I am still very interested to this day about the history of the Bible, and also Christian history, from the very beginning all the way up to the 1600's.

It seems to me that no matter how far I've come in knowledge, I've not gotten any further and still am as ignorant as I was at the beginning. It is wisdom that is better, and that requires cultivating dependence on God. Fear the Lord and honor His commandments, that is the whole of the matter.

Unless one reads with the lens of truth, it can be a waste of time. For example, Bart Ehrman went into Seminary as a Christian and came out of it an agnostic after a few years of deconstructing using the Bible! Some people are so entrenched in a theological system that it completely colors their view of truth. IMHO, scripture is very, very simple. It is the doctrine of men that complicates its simple message. This is why we need His Holy Spirit to direct us into the simplicity of truth before we can understand what is written.
Blessings

Bible study is different than any other sort of study because the bible is truth and immersion in truth causes changes in the reader. Yes one grows in knowledge, but one also grows in the capacity to understand which might be seen as half way between knowledge and wisdom.

One has to remember that God's word is supernatural and its effects can be life changing.

Isa 55:10 For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, and giveth seed to the sower and bread to the eater;
Isa 55:11 so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Probably still not enough to know everything.
After fifty years, we begin to realize how much we truly do not know about God and His creation. We could study forty hours a week for forty years and still be only at the beginning of His wisdom. I’m learning this again as I study the Kingdom of God and the Justice of God. We know almost nothing. We understand human justice — flawed, limited, and inconsistent — but we have a long way to go before we begin to understand God’s justice.

We are only getting started.

The way I think of it, most of what is important in the Christian faith can be 'said' in the space of about 5 to 10 minutes. It's not the amount of accurate knowledge that brings out our relationship with the Lord, rather it's our ongoing willingness to respond to the Gospel message and to the Kerygma of the Church from the 1st century.

That's it. And I don't assume that my 40 years of studying the Bible makes me a 'better' Christian than any other fellow Christian.

On the other hand, learning more about the Bible as you go often has the added benefit of encouraging us more in the faith, and one can never have too much encouragement in this regard.

I think 40 years makes us an elder.

We do not truly understand Torah until forty years have passed.

This comes from the Talmud (Avodah Zarah 5b), and Hasidic teachers repeat it constantly. They say:
  • Forty years is the time it takes for a person to begin to grasp the depth of what their teacher meant.
  • You may “know” the words long before that, but you do not understand them.
  • Torah is infinite, and the human mind grows into it slowly, layer by layer.
Hasidic masters often say:

“After forty years, you begin to understand how little you understand.”

Yes, I've heard that before. I'm not sure it's true in all cases, but I can lean into the general gist of the idea.

I didn’t understand quantum physics in college, but I do now.
Like fine wine, some things improve with age
Metaphorically speaking.

Let me see...I was raised in church ever since I was a baby (my earliest memory is being in a church nursery when I was 3), been reading the Bible my whole life (38 years)...hhhmmm.....been through it cover to cover several times....but wouldn't really consider myself a Bible scholar...because so many of you know more of its Scriptures than I do...

I'm afraid I don't really understand your question. Could you phrase it another way?
