  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

CNN's Data Guru Reveals How the Far-Left Is Devouring Democratic Party

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said on Thursday that the far-left has record-breaking support dating back to the 1990s from those who identify as Democrats.
The number of Democrats identifying as “far-left” has quadrupled since 1999, when only 5 percent of identified as such, and that number has since surged to 21 percent in 2026, Enten said on “CNN News Central.”
Over a quarter of Democrats, 26 percent identified as “conservative” in 1999, while only 8 percent of the party self-identifies as that currently.

A positive shift.

Does the "you kept calling us that so we had no choice but to become that" apply here or is that solely an an excuse for the right?

That's because 45% of voters are now independent compared to 34% back in 1999. So both Republicans and Democratics have see a devastating decrease.

I wonder if this is, in some part, due to the right moving so much further to the right, smack dab into authoritarianism in fact. By that metric, the center-left might seem far left.

But I would certainly like to know how this analyst defines what is left versus far left. Be illuminating, I'd say.

A lot of Democrats are coming over to the Republican side. They're still Dems but they want free speech.

Democrat party: March two steps forward.
Republican party: March in place or take one step back.

Single women are driving a lot of this radicalization. That group is only getting bigger. And they teach too.

Things are happening, but mostly in red states:

Gender studies courses are shutting down across the US. The Epstein files reveal why | Joan Wallach Scott | The Guardian

Short summary from Grok AI:
  • Compliance with Trump's executive order: Gender studies programs are being shut down at universities to comply with Donald Trump's executive order that enforces "biological reality of sex" as a matter of law, promoting traditional sex-based distinctions over gender ideology.
  • Broader political moves in red states: Red state legislatures have passed laws banning the teaching of "divisive concepts" such as race and gender, prompting public universities in states like Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, and Kansas to eliminate these programs.
  • Connection to the Epstein files and elite impunity: The article claims the shutdowns help protect powerful men in Jeffrey Epstein’s circle by suppressing critical analysis of gender hierarchies and toxic masculinity that could expose their exploitation of women and girls.
  • Suppression of critical knowledge: Eliminating gender studies removes a key scholarly tool for examining biological determinism, cultural gender norms, and power structures, which the article equates to broader efforts to erase discussions of diversity, inclusion, slavery, and systemic inequalities.

I'd sure like to see the independents have some clout and displace both the Democrats and the Republicans.

I think it is merely a maturation of what George McGovern started. Republicans have moved a bit to left or right and all around over the years but the Democrats are quite the different thing from what they were. in the days of Humphrey. They would have no room for him in the current party.

I'd say the GOP has been marching inexorably to the far right since Reagan, and the Democrats have shifted slightly to the right in response, causing some in the party to move a bit more to the left.

They are entirely feckless, though, in effecting any legislative changes toward the left's goals however.

Adopting a conservative, market based health care plan devised by the Heritage Foundation instead of fighting for a much more efficient and cost effective single payer plan, for example.

So you honestly think Hubert Humphrey wouldn't be tossed out the door of the Democratic Party if he dared run for office today?

First reason, the sine qua non of 21st century Democratic Party dogma, he had the wrong opinion of abortion. He accused McGovern in the 1972 primaries of "being soft on amnesty, abortion, and acid". Being 'soft' there meant not being solidly opposed to it. By the way, amnesty was about amnesty for draft dodgers.

Do you think his opinions on things might have changed a little, were he still alive today? After all, 1972 was pre Roe v Wade.

-- A2SG, do you think today's GOP would accept Abraham Lincoln as a viable candidate?

You would have to ask him. Of course he's dead, so that might be hard to do. Short of that you would only be inserting your own opinion of what his opinion might possibly have become. His position in 1972 was quite clear.
