  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is anyone else looking forward to the North American release of Mamoru Hosoda's latest film, "Scarlet" in a few days? Supposedly it is based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet". But instead of the Prince of Denmark whose father had been murdered by his uncle, Scarlet is about a sword-wielding princess who embarks on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. And instead of the ghost of the father coming back to ask for revenge, she soon meets an idealistic young man (a time-traveler from our time) who shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage. Hopefully it be more uplifting than the Shakespeare version where everyone important dies.

It has been four years since Hosoda's last film, "Belle", which I thoroughly enjoyed. He is right up there with Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai, in my opinion. I can't wait to see "Scarlet".

OK, I went to see Scarlet yesterday at the theater. One thing I will say is that the visuals were stunningly magnificent. Hosoda's team seems to have developed a next-level animation technique to blend hand-drawing with computer assist. However I was a little disappointed in the story. The development of Scarlet herself from being obsessed with vengeance to learning to let go of that vengeance was not earned. The role of the time-travelling medic from our present time in accompanying Scarlet on her journey was underdeveloped. And most of the 1:51 runtime occurred in a afterlife called "other world" that will appear very foreign and unrecognizable to the Christian perspective. It looked more like a purgatory if purgatory were a way-station on the way to hell instead of heaven. I just couldn't relate. I did enjoy the animation though. It was very expressive.
