The billionaire owner of a bridge connecting Michigan with Canada met Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, on Monday hours before President Trump lambasted a competing span, in the latest flashpoint in the deteriorating relationship between the United States and Canada.

Matthew Moroun is a Detroit-based trucking magnate whose family has operated the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, for decades. He met on Monday with Mr. Lutnick in Washington, according to two officials briefed on the meeting who requested anonymity to discuss a private conversation.

After that meeting Mr. Lutnick spoke with Mr. Trump by phone about the matter, the officials said.

Shortly afterward, Mr. Trump threatened to block the planned opening of a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, which would take away toll revenue from Mr. Moroun’s crossing, if Canadian officials did not address a long list of grievances.
Im shocked, shocked I tell you! Well not that shocked...

Which bridges would those be? Your article is behind a paywall.
Oh? Odd, it's free for me and just asks to read it on their app but let's me read it on the site. Could be an EU regulation thing, maybe? But the new bridge is Gordie Howe International Bridge, the one Trump ranted about on social media. The other bridge is mentioned in the quote.

I had no idea toll bridges could be privately owned, with a private company profiting from the tolls. I thought the tolls all went to the transportation department of the state/city/province they were located in, to pay for bridge and road upkeep.

Have to do some research now...

Oh it gets better.

We have toll lanes in Charlotte owned by a European company. The money not only goes to private pockets but gets sent out of the US economy entirely. Oh, and their contract has a clause saying no improvements can be made to the road for 30 years that would reduce congestion and lower the usage of the lanes.

I live near a river that divides my state from two neighboring states and is crossed by multiple toll bridges. Google is telling me that the bridge nearest me is owned, and tolls are collected, by a bi-state government agency that uses the tolls for various transportation purposes -- bridge maintenance, maintenance of a couple of regional airports, and a little police force that has jurisdiction just in the bridge area. A similar arrangement handles the other bridges over the river. I think this is all very sensible. I naively took for granted that it was this way everywhere.

Thank you for providing the name of at least one of the bridges.

Well.. yes. If you read the quote in the op, the name of the person and the previously existing bridge were there already. I'm not sure what your confusion here was. :mmh:
Poor billionaire.
At least in his mind, yeah. Went straight to complaining to Trump. Well not straight, their family has been against the new bridge for a long time because it would cut into their profits.

The new bridge has been under construction for several years now. A bit late to start complaining about it now that hundreds of millions of dollars have already been spent and it's nearing completion. He should have complained during the first Trump administration if he wanted to complain.

From what I read, he had complained about it ever since the project was announced. Difference was that this time he had Lutnick to talk to who seems to have gone to Donald and... Well here we are.

The new, Canadian financed bridge is the Gordie Howe International Bridge and the older bridge is the Ambassador Bridge.

He complained last term as well.

The Moroun family had previously called on Mr. Trump to halt the construction of the bridge — which, once opened, would compete with the Ambassador Bridge for the more than $300 million in daily cross-border trade.

Mr. Trump on Monday suggested in a post that the United States might seek to acquire “at least one half” of the new bridge and take a cut of the tolls.

In his first term, Mr. Trump had promoted the Gordie Howe Bridge in a joint statement with Canadian officials as a symbol of the countries’ deep ties and as “a vital economic link between our two countries.”
