  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings. For some time I have been researching the Christ the Savior Brotherhood/Holy Order of Manns. My research has led me to a home church in Indianapolis, IN, under the denomination of "Church of Christ." (Not to be confused with the UCoC)

It would appear that CSB is not an Orthodox group. Documents filed with the state of California list it as a church, not a non-profit group of philanthropy.

I would appreciate any information, links, books, etc. that anyone here may have regarding this mysterious group.

Sincerely,

The Reader Peter

Ah yes, the HOOMies...

Well, there's not much to say other than they were a group that tried to be Orthodox until they realized that Orthodoxy actually does exist in this country. Raphael House in San Francisco used to be part of the CSB until most of them joined the OCA.

I believe that an OCA parish in Oregon used to be part of the CSB and one of the priests at my parish was also part of the CSB until they became Orthodox.

That's about all I know. Anyone else?

Many of those in the HOOM became "orthodox" Christians and changed the name of their group to "Christ the Saviour Brotherhood", and I believe most of those then became Orthodox. But if you're seeing groups that still use those names now - then they are not Orthodox.

If you are still interested the book on HOOM/ CSB is unfortunately out of print: Philip Lucas's The Odyssey of a New Religion: The Holy Order of MANS From New Age to Orthodoxy (Indiana UP, 1995). But it is available as a podcast here: Episode 9-11 deal with the transition of some of HOOM into the Orthodox Church.

Thank you for your reply. Can you elaborate how how they got rid of their "weirdness"? For example did the CSB really close? Is it still in existence?
Since you mentioned the ones who joined the Bulgarians - did you know the St. Innocent's Academy problem (ended in 2007 I believe) in Kodiak Alaska.
This is a link to the CSB official handbook. Christ the Saviour Brotherhood

The (now de-frocked) Archpriest Paisius DeLucia ran St. Innocent's Academy in Kodiak, Alaska. He had been part of the H.O.O.M. cult. In retrospect, it was obvious that he was never deprogrammed. I, unfortunately, met him on a church trip to help out his school. From my personal experience I can tell you that he was absolutely not a good person. I've never, personally, been so dehumanized by another person in my life and I only interacted with him for a week. I didn't know he had once been part of this cult when I met him. It was irrelevant because he was running his own cult. He abused a lot of people. It took way too long for the Bulgarian archdiocese to do anything about him.
