  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Trump administration has held covert meetings with fringe separatists from Canada’s oil-rich province of Alberta as a rift deepens between Washington and Ottawa. Leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a group of far-right separatists who want the western province to become independent, met US state department officials in Washington three times since April last year, according to people familiar with the talks. They are seeking another meeting next month with state and Treasury officials to ask for a $500bn credit facility to help bankroll the province if an independence referendum — yet to be called — is passed. “The US is extremely enthusiastic about a free and independent Alberta,” Jeff Rath, APP legal counsel, who attended the meetings, told the FT. He claimed he had a “much stronger relationship” with the Trump administration than Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. --Financial Times

The State Department? What are we doing here?

I'm not getting why anyone Canada would want to part of America. For the sake of Canada, I hope it doesn't happen.
They want to be independent of Ottawa, for good reasons, not necessarily new states of the United States. Canada as we have known it may be over. If Alberta and Saskatchewan leave it is likely Manitoba and the Yukon and even British Columbia will join them in a confederation. And Quebec would probably then make the same move towards independence. Early indications in Alberta are that there are long lines waiting to sign the petition to have an independence vote. Nobody expects that petition not to get way more than enough signatures to force the referendum. If they do it it's pretty much guaranteed for the rest of the western provinces. In a year it is likely Canada will be a radically different place.

An independent Alberta (and other western provinces) would have much more affinity with the USA than the old Canada even without becoming US states and staying independent. Besides, US Democrats would be totally opposed to these provinces becoming states as they would more than likely shift power in the Senate and the House away from Democrats for a hundred or more years. So Democrats would vote 'NO'. It won't happen. You don't need to worry.

For what it's worth I would pass up caviar for spam in a heartbeat. Caviar is nasty, spam is less nasty. :)

Canada is an ally of the US. Why is the State Department fueling Canadian separatists? Canada's rude awakening is the US just can't be trusted in more ways than one. It's nothing but chaos out of DC. So of course Canada has no choice to seek trading partners where they can foster economic stability. Can't trust a president who slaps absurd tariffs on a country just because they mock his comb over. So they make deals with China. For that, the US places more tariffs not only on them, but on other nations who do the same equally realizing you just can't depend on the US for stability.

Nothing - Alberta is not asking to be part of the US - only independent from Canada - which is no surprise given the feckless and vapid leadership they have been suffering under.

The Premiere doesn't seem to know his hat from a basket ball when it comes to being effective for his country. His left leaning climate position has put a stranglehold on them through regulations and restrictions - sound familiar?

No one said they wanted to be part of the US.
What I am asking is why the State Department is meeting with separatists at all?
It's clear they want no part of the US, but it's clear the State Department is fueling the separatists.
...and btw, when it comes to effective leadership, Carney's approval in Canada is the exact inverse of Trump's disapproval in the US.
Trump has a 20 point deficit in approval as it relates to Carney. How's that for effectiveness approval?

Out of curiosity looked at Carney's approval in Alberta. It's about 60 percent. some 30 points higher than Trump's.

Albertans are looking to throw-in with Trump?
What’s to lose!?
They are seeking independence from Canada, and from Carney. While there has been talk about becoming part of the United States the central idea is independence from Canada. From what I have heard it has little if anything to do with Trump. It’s about sending revenue to Ottawa and getting almost nothing in return except for heavy regulations. It is a very populist movement. Quebec is thinking about doing the same thing and if Alberta goes, taking Saskatchewan with them, Quebec will go too.

Democrats have every reason to oppose Alberta as a 51st state. They would likely never have a senator from the Democratic Party, and never a majority of House members.

They would likely outcome I expect is a new and prosperous country of Western Canada, with Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, BC, and Manitoba that is friendly with the USA and trades heavily with the USA. Quebec as an independent country. And what’s left of Canada going more liberal but bankrupt. It will be a wild decade.

Who should they speak with?
It's clear they want no part of the US, but it's clear the State Department is fueling the separatists.
By communicating? They approached the US, not vice versa.

Quebec has wanted independence longer.
Good for them. Last time they voted they got 49.7 percent for independence. Maybe this time it goes over the top.

People are lining up to sign the petition to have the referendum. Soon there will be enough signatures to force the referendum. Then we'll see if that poll is accurate or not. My guess is a vote this summer.

As to Trump, he lives rent free inside lots of people's heads.

My reference is the article.

State Departments meet with their counterparts.
State Departments speak with all sorts of people. Not just other people in other State Departments.
