  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

After Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital, was killed by a federal law enforcement officer in front of multiple eyewitnesses in Minneapolis Jan. 24, the Trump administration was quick to politicize his death.

Vice President JD Vance reposted Stephen Miller, who on X called Pretti an "assassin" who "tried to murder federal agents" — a statement that is not supported by any evidence.

Once again, Vance had the opportunity to call for peace and unity — to lower the temperature of the situation and express empathy with those suffering and mourning. Vance, fresh off a speech at the March for Life, could have leaned into his supposed pro-life beliefs and called for respect for human life at every stage. In fact, that would have been the Catholic response — that's how the bishops themselves responded in their statement.

As a Catholic, Vance could have chosen to share the Gospel message of healing and human dignity. Instead, he chose to offer the MAGA message of division and blame.

"This level of engineered chaos is unique to Minneapolis. It is the direct consequence of far left agitators, working with local authorities," he wrote on Jan. 24.

Vance's comments are once again a moral stain on our collective witness of Catholicism — but they are no longer surprising. Given its scandal, the vice president's cafeteria Catholicism must continue to be repudiated by people of faith.

[Vance is not alone within Catholicism.]

Fr. James Altman, a prominent MAGA priest who is no longer allowed to preach publicly, demanded that "everyone who interferes with Law Enforcement should be crushed in the arrest and thrown in the Gulag. They are criminals and it is time to start treating them as such," while repeating, "NO MORE MERCY."

A Catholic priest online advocating against mercy. Jesus wept.

What is most disturbing to me is the lack of compassion for the many victims of the border policies of the Biden administration. Many of the women were raped on their way to the United States. Human trafficking rose to a level not seen here since our Civil War. Over 63,000 of the children have been rescued by the Trump administration, many of those kids were in sexual slavery. The evils of Marxism have been here for a long time, Bishop Fulton Sheen spoke out against such evils. We are in a period where this evil has now manifested itself with so many political leaders fanning the flames of hatred, and many people are caught up in the false promises. Demonizing law enforcement and promoting violence against them is not the Christian way. Slowing ICE by interfering means the rescues of victims of human trafficking will take longer, and the criminals will have more time to prey upon new victims. People need to put the welfare of those victims ahead of their own political beliefs.

I don't think that's been demonstrated. Regardless, compassion for victims should not impel us to drop federal agents from a helicopter in the dead of night and roust out an entire apartment building, citizens or not.

What we're discussing is this alleged "lack of compassion" for crime victims.

Biden had something to do with that?

Trump is the rapist, not Biden.

It is Roman Catholic doctrine to oppose abortion. When will we see a call from National Catholic Reporter to follow the Gospel and not the Democrats?

So what? NCR is a newspaper about and aimed at Catholics. It doesn't claim to be endorsed or published by the Vatican.

What we're discussing is this alleged "lack of compassion" for crime victims.
One has to view someone as being a crime victim first.

One side makes a claim, and then claim that anyone who doesn't accept the initial claim is lacking compassion, lacking empathy, is morally bankrupt, is a thrall to Donald Trump etc.

It's a spinoff of Marxism, the CRT mentality. Oppressor and oppressed. Law enforcement are portrayed as the oppressors.
Is every fight for the liberation of the oppressed Marxism (in your mind)? Were the Northern soldiers in the Civil War marxists?
Was Moses a marxist when he led the Hebrews out of Egypt?
Just asking for clarification.

Sure it’s aimed at Catholics. But clergy has recommended it be avoided as they distort the faith and the authentic Catholic pov. In other words, who cares what a paper that obstinately targets Catholics while calling itself Catholic (when asked not to by the Church?)

It does not represent any authentic Catholic pov and based not on Church teachings but politics has to say? It’s no different than reading any other type of yellow journalism.

If it is written by Catholics and for Catholics, how can it not have a genuine Catholic POV? Is the problem that it isn't the view dictated by the Vatican? Your church is far more varied than that.

All one has to look up its history Hans. And what the Church has to say about it. It is a dissenting publication which does not uphold Catholic teaching. You can believe what you choose but it’s not authentic Catholicism they are pushing. And that’s a fact.

It's a newspaper, not a propaganda arm. I looked at its content and it's way too Catholic for my taste. Full of stories about bishops and popes, etc. All of the most boring things in the world. (I'm having flashbacks to looking for something to read with breakfast and only finding some Catholic publication. Shudder.)

lol! Whatever works for you Hans. I told you to look up the history of the rag and what the Church says about it standing with authentic Catholic teachings. Not read the articles.

It does seem that Donald Trump serves the Catholic pov pretty well. Or I should say, the other way round. So I can see why conflicting takes such as this one must be marginalized.

Oh ouch. Thats gonna hurt in the morning.

A quick blip from AI:

The Catholic Church, particularly through various bishops,
officially views the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) as a non-official publication often at odds with Church teaching. Critics, including Bishop Robert Finn in 2013, have stated the publication promotes dissent on issues like women's ordination, contraception, and sexual morality, leading to calls for it to drop "Catholic" from its name.
