  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Video of peaceful Minneapolis protesters from last night:

Mayor Frey has made the decision that visiting law enforcement will not get the same police protection as everyone else.

Then maybe ICE shouldn't harass those same police officers with illegal stops when they’re off duty.

Imagine harassing law enforcement and then crying when they won’t come to protect you. Also, given ICE‘s chronic inability to not shoot members of the public, it was probably safer for the police to stay away from them.

Here's another account giving more specifics on the responses:

it says police were called because of a noisy crowd. One officer responded. As the crowd became disorderly, he called for help from both his own police and "outside agencies."

At this point accounts diverge. Police say:

"Minnesota State Patrol and Department of Natural Resources officers responded, and local authorities started working to disperse the crowd and surround those who needed to be arrested.

"Homeland Security said Bureau of Prisons officers were actually the first to get to the scene, doing so shortly after 7:13 p.m., and confirmed Border Patrol agents were housed at the hotel.

"According to DHS, “agitators” then started putting vehicles and trash cans on both sides of the street and smashing the hotel’s front door glass. Some also damaged vehicles outside and caused other damage.

"The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, on the other hand, says that as state and city police were working to encircle the protesters to make additional arrests, “federal agents arrived without communication and deployed chemical irritants, clearing the group.”

It seems that it's false to say that Minnesota police did not respond. For details, we have a disagreement that I'm not in a position to judge. One problem with Noem's obvious lies is that it tends to push me to believe the police when they disagree with Homeland Security. But it's certainly possible that not everything they say is false. It's even possible that we're seeing differing perspectives on the same thing, with Homeland security not coordinating with or taking account of police activity.

Certainly if I were Minnesota police, once Federal agents arrive I'd stop what I was doing. The last thing they need are two forces not coordinating with each other and possibly coming into conflict.

From the article the OP quoted:

"Some Minneapolis residents said what began as a peaceful protest escalated into a confrontation when federal agents used chemical agents and physical force against crowds, including blocking streets with garbage dumpsters and dragging protesters into police vehicles."

Lack of police enforcement will trigger calling in the national guard. Then there will be lots of whining about the NG acting as a police force.

The "protesters" are acting like the Jan 6th rioters.

Let me suggest a scenario that's consistent with both Minnesota and Federal stories:

Policeman shows up in response to a call about noise. He calls for help.

Minneapolis doesn't have a bunch of spare cops sitting around to deal with this. They call in people from 2 state agencies. This group gets together to coordinate.

Meanwhile Federal guys come barreling in, with no coordination with the police, and start doing stuff.

The police would surely not want to get into a jurisdictional battle with the Feds. Most of them would likely go back to policing. The Feds might not realize the police were there.

As far as I know, no one is suggesting that the protesters were OK. The Minneapolis police where planning to arrest some of them.

If the DNR is on the way they'll get you for that undersized fish. Beware protestors!

We have seen this picture before. Heavy-handed government in one form or another teeing off with a mostly non-consenting public. It will only get worse as the atmosphere is toxic.

I know a DNR officer who single handedly captured several escapees. IIRC, he caught them making their way through a swamp / river basin. They have more authority than many might think.

Most likely....

The coordination amongst federal agents is poor. MPD police commander noted last week that it's difficult to communicate with the feds.

The Minneapolis police chief said the tactics of ICE are obviously unsafe. The problem lies in the Minneapolis police force refusing to do their job, knowing there will be trouble with agitators and ICE, not a Minneapolis cop can be found until crimes are committed and ICE calls 911. You will see Minneapolis police out there for virtually every other protest. In Memphis, were the local police cooperate with ICE, crime has been cut in half. Tom Homan is also going to look into the fraud, which is creating panic among Minnesota bureaucrats.

If it's anything like the other hotels that are part of the Hilton chains, it's ironic that a bunch of entitled white college kids "standing up for immigrants" is going to end with a bunch of immigrants making $11/hour, sweeping up broken glass and trying to clean "ICE get out" paint off the windows that weren't broken on the first floor.

I'm sure the protestors will be there, ready & eager, to help them clean up the mess they made, right?
