  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Christian lecturer was in court this week to appeal a tribunal decision that upheld his dismissal from a Bible college over a social media post expressing traditional Evangelical views on sexuality.

Aaron Edwards argues that the Sheffield Tribunal's ruling upholding his dismissal unlawfully undermined his freedom of religion and expression.

The Christian theologian was sacked by Cliff College in Derbyshire after tweeting comments defending the biblical view of sexuality in response to a debate in the Church of England in February 2023 to allow same-sex blessings.

In his tweet, Edwards said, “Homosexuality is invading the Church. Evangelicals no longer see the severity of this b/c they’re busy apologizing for their apparently barbaric homophobia, whether or not it’s true. This is a ‘Gospel issue,’ by the way. If sin is no longer sin, we no longer need a Saviour.”

His comments prompted widespread reactions on social media, with some critics accusing him of homophobia. In subsequent tweets, he defended his comments as reflecting "the conservative view" on these issues, and insisted it was "not homophobic to declare homosexuality sinful."

Well, this thread probably won’t last long. I’m not surprised that pointing out what scripture says isn’t tolerated and dismissed as “homophobic.” After all, pointing out what scripture says about pre-marital relations and adultery isn’t popular, either.

This is surprising. I live within fifty miles of the College and I seem to remember, from years ago, that it had a good reputation in evangelical circles.

I've just checked the College's website. It has Methodist roots and is a member of The Evangelical Alliance. The Alliance upholds the Biblical view of marriage being between one man and one woman and do not support churches blessing same-sex marriages. However they encourage sensitivity in helping those with same-sex attraction live out their faith in a Biblical manner. It would fit better with their views if the lecturer had said that 'homosexual activity' was sinful rather than saying that 'homosexuality' was.

I think that we don't know the full facts.

That or the college has changed. Either one could be true. As an example of the latter, Mercer University in Georgia was closely associated with the Georgia Baptist Convention until its President Godsey wrote a book that was pretty heretical and the university board endorsed him. Also, I might add, the controversy got white-washed by a newspaper in the same city, and that newspaper account was picked up by the AP.
