  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Any books that explain the different churches / denominations for a seeker?

I'm looking for a book that explains things like what is Presbyterian? What is Baptist? What is Roman Catholic, what is Anglican etc? In enough detail to understand the differences and any nuances within each group.

I have read a bit from specific viewpoints, and understand the differences are not always theological, ie Presbyterians may not all be Calvinists these days.

One book I have is written on a simple, popular level and it lays out the differences between today's mainstream denominations pretty well:

The Unauthorized Guide to Choosing a Church - by Carmen Renee Berry (2003).
You can also listen to the guy named Joshua on the Ready to Harvest youtube channel. He does a pretty good job of covering details of the distinctives of each denominational group and subgroups. Just do a search within his channel and he probably has a video to cover whichever denomination you want info on.

Go to each one of the churches you are looking into and see what they say they are.

For an example here is First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, Ms their beliefs
Core Beliefs — First Presbyterian Church

Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy by Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick was one I found useful even when I wasn't Orthodox:

I listened to the audio version, which was published for free in podcast form. There are lots of good free resources online I'd check out before buying anything.
