  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I want to start a reading the Bible in a year plan, and was wondering which format to use. I saw three that I was interested in - the Canonical format where it is read straight through from Genesis to Revelation, the Chronological format where it is read as it historically happened, and one that takes some from the OT, the NT, and Psalms or Proverbs on a daily basis.

Anyone have any ideas or recommendations regarding which method might be best?

I’ve done both the chronological and the Genesis to Revelation methods. I have not tried jumping back and forth but I don’t think I would like that as much because the flow is not there. I think this new year I’m going to go back to reading it chronologically. Need to remember to order a new guide though.

What resource did you use for the Chronological format?

There are guides that you can order so you can use the translation that you like. I guess the one from Thomas Nelson publishing is probably good enough even though is not very popular with YECs. Or you can always buy a chronological bible in the translation that you prefer.

You can do any format. The Bible has 1,189 Chapters, which equals 3.2 a day, or about 7 a day to read in six months, which I prefer.

I chart like this, you can just check off. There is no better order, but I prefer some (4) O.T., some (2) N.T., and a (1) Psalm.

Thanks. Looks easy enough to keep track of that way.

What is it you like about doing the combined OT/NT approach?

OT is obviously older history, and certain parts can be tedious. I still love it. NT just gives balance with "newer" teachings. Especially the Gospels, which are the life of Christ, and the Epistles, which are teachings based on Christ's teachings, and more. So, for example, OT, you can cover 2 or 4 chapters a day in a ratio of 1 or 2 NT . Then a daily Psalm is irreplaceable. It's just a good balance instead of an overload of one Testament. Well, whatever suits one's fancy.

I did it once beginning on January 1st one year. I noted how many pages were in my Bible according to the page numbers and figured out how many pages I had to read in order to finish by the end of the year. I think it was something like two and a half pages per day. I did that and often would find interesting things I hadn't seen before and would want to keep going. I think I finished in the middle of October of that year.
