It's strange how they're already repeating one of the major mistakes that cost Democrats the 2024 election.

0.4% more inflation might actually be acceptable if there were other benefits. But it's not just inflation rates that matter.

First, the article notes that not all tariffs have been passed on. There's a lot of uncertainty about which will continue. But expect that during 2026 the rest of the cost will be passed on.

The more serious question is whether tariffs will increase US activity. I don't see any evidence of that. Hiring seems to be down. Of course attacks on immigrants are likely involved as well. It's hard to separate the influences. To complicate matters, there's probably some reluctance to hire because of (likely inflated) hopes that AI will replacer workers.

In general, it's not obvious that Trump's policies have had all that much effect on the economy. This isn't a shock. The Federal government has limited ability to improve the economy, and what effect they have tend to have significant delays. In some ways the most serious effect of Trump is probably his constant changes. That, rather than the tariffs themselves, may well be behind the reluctance of companies to hire.

This whole thing bothers me. I'm concerned that voters are voting in candidates who make promises about the economy, when in fact they have limited ability to do much. Trump has done lots of things that voters should evaluate. I think they would justify changing parties in 2028. But if people vote for a Democrat expecting him to bring prices down, they're going to be disappointed.

A more serious problem that the Feds should be dealing with is the deficit. We can't keep this up. We need to put taxes back up, or give up subsidizing health care. Or both. Unfortunately both alternatives are politically difficult.

Yes, for any company that relies on trade, it's impossible to plan (and invest) for the future when the man sitting in the White House could issue a self-defeating tariff order on a whim. Some of that uncertainty may go away once the U.S. Supreme Court rules on the legality of the Trump tariffs.
