  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On a Friday in October, there were shootings in three towns, in three different counties, in rural Mississippi. This was Friday, October 11, and some of the shootings happened after midnight, on Saturday, October 12. The final tally is nine dead from gunfire, not counting a fetus, over two dozen injured by gunfire and one other death. Why Mississippi? It is a stand-your-ground state, which does not recognize a duty to retreat from violence, and it allows concealed carry and open carry of guns without a permit.

MSNBC quotes Nick Wilson, who works for the Center for American Progress. Wilson says, “Trump is sending the National Guard to Chicago, but Mississippi’s homicide rate is twice that of Illinois.” He goes on to say that permitless carry of guns can cause small disputes to turn deadly. Another observer blames the combination of guns, alcohol and drugs.
