  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No worries. It's a good opening for a progressive, Chakribarti looks likely, just what the Democrats need at this point.
That’s what I’m concerned about, another progressive. San Fran deserves better.

Boy are you ever right. I'm 82, still relatively alert, fit and active for my age, no health problems, no meds, and I could not possibly acquit myself well in a high pressure job like that.

You're lucky to still be in such good health at 82... imagine the stresses of doing that job for a person who's not in great health or is experiencing some mental slipping at that age.

If PubMed/NIH longitudinal numbers are any indicator:
(22.2%) in the United States age 71 years or older had cognitive impairment without dementia. Prominent subtypes included prodromal Alzheimer disease (8.2%) and cerebrovascular disease (5.7%). Among participants who completed follow-up assessments, 11.7% with cognitive impairment without dementia progressed to dementia annually.

When you consider that 1/3 of the Senate and 1/5 of the House of Reps are over that age... The idea that statistically 22% of them are experiencing decline that could progress to dementia is more than just a little concerning.

I realize however, that those folks may not line up with the general population as conventional wisdom would dictate that an election process itself is a sort of "weeding out" of people who are in that state. Although, at that age, a lot can change in the duration of a Senate term.

Then there's also the other metabolic and cardiovascular issues are that all too prevalent among Americans that are over the age of 65.

I don't even understand the mentality behind wanting to the job at that age in the first place. Most of them have healthy bank accounts... they have to really love power in order to keep doing that job as opposed to retiring and enjoying their golden years. My plan is to retire at 58, not work, and focus on doing some traveling (provided the market doesn't take a major dump in the next 15 years)

If one had millions and millions of dollars, insisted on staying in a job until they're 85 where it's nothing but nonsense and half of the country hating them, and then died 18 months later (as opposed to hanging up the hat 65 and enjoying those last 20 years), what a waste.

You think being a Congressman is easy?
It says they worked 119 days in 2023. Yes they do other stuff, but a lot of that is handled by clerks and assistants. The only real hard part is the work put in to getting your face in front of a TV camera as often as possible. Theoretically, one could be illiterate and be a congressman. Of course it would be nice to be able to read a restaurant menu while you're in a place with which we have important relations, that you've taken a taxpayer-paid-for junket to, like Tahiti.

I am out of my mind with jealousy. I probably should run. You know what they say, Washington D.C. is Hollywood for ugly people.

...widely viewed as the most effective Speaker....ever.
I always kind of viewed her career as the inverse.

I think she was more effective during her times without the gavel when she was merely getting things for her district as a rank-in-file member.

- Preserving the Presidio
- Securing HIV/AIDS funding for San Francisco back when it was an epidemic in that city
- Secured nearly a half billion in federal funding for various transit related projects in the city
- Secured funds for free clinics for the city's homeless population

Her major claim to fame during her time with the gavel basically just includes getting the Affordable Care Act pushed through, which while a large piece of legislation, the numbers were stacked in her favor.

The composition of the legislature at that time was 58 democratic senators (and two independents, Bernie and Joe Lieberman who caucused with the Democrats)

And in the house the Democrats had a huge majority.

...and then maybe played an auxiliary role during the financial reform/regulatory legislation (but most of the effort on that was from Chris Dodd and Barney Frank)

So I think her "rank-in-file" resume was better than her Speaker resume...but that's just my opinion.

So many claims to fame...was it the remarkable feat of voting for that bill without having read it, or the ingenious insider trading she pulled off, or was it successfully breaking the law by getting her hair did in public without a mask during covid, which she had self-righteously admonished we the peons for doing? Historians will have to sort it out.

This clip is so funny. One lady says people will get their hair done "at any cost". I picture soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy for a trim.

Then the SF reporter emphasizes the important fact that, Nancy didn't get her hair cut, only washed and blow-dried. There are volumes of scientific evidence proving that you can't inhale a flu while getting a wash, only while getting a haircut.
