  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Good riddance. She was not, herself, a neolibleral but certainly a "fellow traveller."
If anything, it's a "good riddance" situation to have another octogenarian out of an influential political position.

There are serious liabilities associated with having people of that age holding certain positions.

There's obviously the physical ailments that are a risk (like we've seen with Mitch McConnell and the freeze ups and falls), and Diane Feinstein having to be away for months due to age related health deterioration.

Just in the past 5 years:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (90) — hospitalized after a fall and had a months-long absence from the Senate in 2023 before later dying in Sept. 2023.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (82) — hospitalizations and hip-replacement surgery/rehab after a fall (2021–2022), which prompted absences.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (age 90+) — hospitalized for an infection and received IV antibiotics (January 2024) and was out of commission for roughly 2 weeks.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (83) — multiple public health incidents in 2023 (episodes where he “froze” or appeared ill) that drew attention and temporary interruptions to duties

Rep. Steny Hoyer (85) — suffered an ischemic stroke (August 2024), was treated and took a month off before returning.

Rep. Dwight Evans (70) — suffered a stroke (announced May 2024) and missed votes while in recovery for months.

Rep. John B. Larson (76) — experienced a medical incident / adverse reaction while speaking on the House floor (Feb. 2025) that briefly removed him from active duties.

...so just in terms of us as citizens, we deserve to have senators and reps that aren't going to have to miss work for months because they slipped on a sidewalk or caught the flu.

But then there's also varying cognitive decline that 40% of people in the age range of 75-85 experience that could have some very negative effects.

I think back to that one time when my grandma was getting older and a little more forgetful, and she accidentally let the cat out of the bag for my younger brother's surprise party because she confused him for one of my cousins and told him about it over the phone.

Now replace "grandma" with "Intelligence Committee member", and replace "grandson's 13th birthday" with "classified intel" -- and you see where my concerns lie.

I am more worried about what clown called "It" is going to replace her.
No worries. It's a good opening for a progressive, Chakribarti looks likely, just what the Democrats need at this point.

Boy are you ever right. I'm 82, still relatively alert, fit and active for my age, no health problems, no meds, and I could not possibly acquit myself well in a high pressure job like that.

He's just what the Republicans need at this point.

I honestly dont think it will make a difference. It's going to be another liberal Democrat who will vote for everything the Democrats want and vote against everything the Republicans want. In other words. Nothing is going really change.

ANYTHING that lowers the age of that retirement home is going to be a good thing.

But like rjs says, I wouldn't expect anything earth shattering or new to happen.

A bit less insider trading though.

That's pretty much the way it should be with a freshmen Congressman. The problem is that Democrats, at this point, aren't in agreement about what they want.

The stock market will dearly miss her.
I don't know, but I think she is leaving Congress due to a possible insider trading investigation and legislation that forbids Congress from participating in the stock market.
