  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

To clarify, what I meant was I was unclear about the bias you were alleging.

Regardless, the question of "respect" gets muddy pretty quickly. I probably agree with you more than you suspect, but there's still the fact that when officers are in uniform, they aren't mere human beings; they're agents of the state. They're the carnal manifestation of the government's authority to use violence to coerce compliance with its laws. The relationship between cops and civilians is just fundamentally different than it is between two civilians.

There are ways of interacting with the state that are proper (e.g. protesting, refusing to engage in conversation) that would be considered rude or disrespectful if done to another civilian. I do think a lot of people use "protest" as an excuse to act like petty jerks and I do think cops deserve to be treated with decency and respect, but they're still not the same.
I've seen people protest, decline to assist in an investigation and assert their right to remain silent without being disrespectful

This occupation has no end.
Or purpose at all.

Can any Trump fans here tell just what they think the NG is achieving with this indefinite occupation of our nation’s capital?

Sure, and the flip side of that is that there are different notions of "respect." There's civility or decency and then there's compliance or obeisance. If we're talking about the former, I'm on board. The latter, not so much.

If I was the guy''s commander I'd tear him another. 'Just what the ..... did you think you were doing! He threw a sandwich?' I'd seriously consider standing him down for overreacting.
Yeah here’s the problem. This guy’s commander is likely just as bad or much worse than he is. These agencies have gone completely rogue and answer to almost no one.

I’m not at all convinced these people don’t enjoy what they’re doing to their fellow Americans. There’s plenty of videos of ICE/CBP agents mocking and insulting the people they’re interacting with while out in the field, and much worse. That’s why I feel a sandwich thrown at one is honestly the lightest these people deserve. In some other time, targeting some other group than harmless migrant workers, these officers would be dealing with an armed response to their actions. They should be thankful the people protesting them have been so kind. They don’t deserve it.

You can't arrest someone for disrespect. My question has been is disrespect acceptable morally, not legally
Respect should be earned, not assumed. Treat people with respect and they should treat you the same.

Do you think ICE agents have been totally respectful towards the communities they’re policing?

Do you think all law enforcement officers should be judged by the actions of a few?

Generally, no.

ICE is a special case. They were around before this administration gave them this assignment and have been doing their jobs just fine. There is a marked difference in their entire approach to immigration enforcement now where it seems maximum cruelty is the whole point, normal law enforcement a second concern.

It’s okay to disrespect someone?
Yes.
Or it’s just okay to disrespect someone who works in law enforcement?
Respect is earned. So are reputations.
Are they not human beings? Do they not deserve to be treated like other human beings?
Your asking this about ICE/DHS/BCP migrant patrols? Seriously?
And since it’s a constitutional right does that make it okay to disrespect people because of their occupation? Because you have a right to do it does that make it acceptable?
When you join a gang, you know live with their earned reputation.

You lost me when you said it's okay to disrespect someone. Besides that you've already demonstrated how little you know about law enforcement

As long as it's on your own time and doesn't interfere with your work (like supplying marriage licenses) of course.

Okay, I can get on board with that. If a cop says nasty things about gay people but treats them okay at work that would be fine.

“I could feel it through my ballistic vest,” the agent testifies. “The sandwich…exploded all over my uniform. I could smell the onions and the mustard.” As Joseph Conrad’s Kurtz might have testified....

Does this man have any self-respect?

I do know that a lot of people are interested in it because they want to order people around like tough guys.

If there is an agency that has earned total and complete disrespect it is ICE/BCP and it didn't start this year.

There are definitely people who have no business being in law enforcement but you are judging all of them by the actions of a few.
It's not about ordering people around
