  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

With Trump, it gets worse before it gets worse.
Yes, inflation will get worse before it gets better. Almost EVERYONE agrees, including Trump.

The non-government forecasts that companies depend on show increases in the last half of the year, continuing through mid 2026, peaking at under 4%, a very manageable number.

The primary thing to remember is that this is a one-time event. Prices won't come down, but they won't increase for new tariffs either. The primary issue has been uncertainty. What is the new norm? That still needs to be worked out with several countries, including Canada and India. But that will happen by year's end, and the 2026 situation will be the new norm.
=========
The economy and we all will be able to live with and thrive in the new reality including the tariffs.
========
Trump has made many more changes that will be much, much harder to absorb and get used to.

It will be difficult to get used to the increase in measles, polio and other preventable diseases. The vaccines for the next pandemic will need to be developed in Europe. The transition of the center of scientific excellence and research out of the US will be difficult to get beyond. [Thousands of scientists and researchers are moving to Europe or are considering it]. Many fewer will come to the US

Many federal departments and functions are being gutted. Even if there was a consensus to reverse Trump's actions, it will take decades. The experienced people are moving on to other employers, Much of the responsibility for providing for the safety net is being moved to the states. Many Republican states have little interest in performing and paying for this #1 function of government.

How can you say what someone is able to live with? The only groups who haven’t complained about higher prices and tariffs are those with discretionary income, homesteaders and preppers. Does that sound like most of our citizens? When people start restricting their meat consumption and looking for depression era recipes they‘re not thriving.

If you think that 3-4% inflation, very low unemployment and 6% mortgages are so horrendous that we can't think though such times, I suggest a history book look at the 70's or lots of other decades.

Look at any studies that compare decades and look at what the situation of the middle class and lower classes. "Most of our citizens" are better off than ever before in the history of civilization.
===========
The ONLY caveat is that Trump is trying to reduce the safety net from the very high levels of LAST YEAR.

I’m talking about real life not data. If someone says they’re struggling I wouldn’t respond to their acknowledgment with that statement. It sounds heartless and tone deaf. No book captures everything and there’s a lot that never makes it in.

It’s obvious you like Trump but no amount of fondness should divorce you from the fact that people are suffering. Maybe you aren’t but others are.

This is a religious, and political board addressing the economy.

One says that the economy is better shape than in decades and that the vast majority are better off. Your answer is that many are suffering.

That is simply nonresponsive.

Of course, some folks are suffering. As scripture teaches, this will always be. It is the #1 job of government, of all of us, to do all we can to care for those among us who are sick, poor, weak, prisoners and those oppressed.

We must be kind every day in all our actions.

And, yes, we should support those leaders whose policies will best provide a safety net for the weakest among us.
=========
With regard to the economy, I recall what the Democrats and their supports forecast when Trump was elected and again in April when the tariffs were announced. By now, we were to have rampant inflation, a recession and considerable unemployment. When evaluating economic policies, one evaluates actual results and even projected results (the stock market is what the rich project will happen in the economy).

Where is the rampant inflation, unemployment and recession. Democrats and their supporters have the answer. Wait, things will get worse and worse and worse until we elected Democrats who will implement their economic policies.
===========
SUGGESTION FOR DEMOCRATS
Work with state officials, local officials, and local businesses to help us do better in this movement of social welfare responsibilities away from the federal government. Let us build stronger local alliances among the people, business and governments (and also faith communities).

Part of the reason for the chaos is not Trump. It is the failure of federal government to perform its responsibilities without vast corruption and waste. So, let us move on and develop better local programs.

Unfortunately, bird flu isn't over.
And it's not just for chickens.

Sticker shock: Cost of turkey up 75% over last year

Thanks to the avian flu outbreak, there are 5 million fewer turkeys raised in the U.S. this year compared with 2024, making it a 40 year low, according to Purdue University.

The wholesale price of a turkey this year is up a staggering 75% compared with last year, averaging about $1.71 per pound.

“The price of a 15-pound turkey may come in at about $31 this year, but I would say there are going to be lots of grocery store operators that are going to mark those prices down, just to get you in the door with the likelihood that you’re going to buy something else,” he said.

+caveats....(yes, it may be fine for those of us who have already have a home, raised our children, have healthcare and a retirement nest egg. What about the younger generations?

1. Homes are unaffordable for first time home buyers
The median age of first-time buyers rose to 40 in 2025 from 38 the year before, and is up sharply from 33 just five years ago, according the annual profile of homebuyers and home sellers released by the National Association of Realtors® on Tuesday.

The share of all home purchases that were made by first-time buyers fell to 21% this year, the lowest on records dating to 1981. Meanwhile, cash buyers accounted for 26% of sales, an all-time high.

2. Child care is unaffordable
More than 40 percent of American families are struggling to find affordable childcare.

A new report from the Economic Policy Institute shows that childcare for one infant now costs more than rent in 17 states and more than in-state college tuition in 38 states.

3. Healthcare - Those without employer provided health care plans are SOL.

4. The average price of a new car is now 50k

I agree that these are very serious problems, not as serious as those 4 years ago, but problems nonetheless.

I don't see the solutions as having the federal government hand out money, other than more tax advantages for those with children and the working poor.

Trump just bragged about Walmart’s cheaper Thanksgiving dinner, but here’s what he conveniently left out

“Walmart just announced that Prices for a Thanksgiving Dinner is now down 25% since under Sleepy/Crooked Joe Biden, in 2024,” Trump wrote Wednesday. “AFFORDABILITY is a Republican Stronghold. Hopefully, Republicans will use this as irrefutable fact!”

A community note on X pointed out that this year’s meal featured fewer brand-name items and six fewer items overall. The Turkey cost nine cents more [per pound] compared to last year, and 2024 items like a [2 pound Marie Callender's] premade pie, cranberry sauce and onions were dropped entirely.

--------
cut out the pecan pie, whipped topping, marshmallows, corn muffins, sweet potatoes, fresh onions, celery, poultry seasoning
Substitute lots of mac and cheese
make your own cranberry sauce
count on Walmart to absorb the 70% increase in turkey prices

'It was a horrible scene to witness': How bird flu has decimated elephant seal populations

In Peru and Chile together, more than 30,000 sea lions died between 2022 and 2023. In Argentina, about 13,000 sea lions and fur seals were killed. But it was at the Peninsula Valdés that the most impactful die-off took place. Researchers estimate that nearly 97% of the site's elephant seal pups died, making it the largest mortality event ever recorded for the species.

'Con job!' Trump snaps at reporter over fact check on his big Thanksgiving claim

"Mr. President, since you brought up the Walmart Thanksgiving meal, and it is cheaper, but it also contains less," the reporter noted.

"Fake news!" Trump bellowed. "NBC, you're fake news! NBC's gone down the tubes along with most of the rest of them."

"So that would mean that the whole series of pricing and costs, you know, the groceries and everything else, it was a con job. It was a con job, affordability, they call it, was a con job by the Democrats."
