  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Tropical Storm Melissa is projected to become a major hurricane that could inflict devastating damage on several Caribbean islands, as the possibility of the United States experiencing some of the storm's effects remains.

The projected path of the storm, compiled by the National Hurricane Center, shows Melissa strengthening into a Hurricane Saturday evening before reaching the status of a major hurricane shortly thereafter.

The storm is expected to be centered on Jamaica through Tuesday before advancing to Cuba as a major hurricane on Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center defines a major hurricane as a storm with wind speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour.

Both a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning are in effect for the southwestern peninsula of Haiti from the border with the Dominican Republic to Port-au-Prince. As explained in an advisory published by the National Hurricane Center, "Significant, life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides are expected in the southern Dominican Republic and eastern Jamaica, with catastrophic flash flooding and landslides anticipated in southern Haiti."

Here's something I'm keeping a watch on: National Forecast Maps Scroll down to Short Range Forecasts and Medium Range Forecast. Notice the two cold fronts forecast to sweep through the Southeastern US about the 28th. I'm hoping that this will keep it off the US.

Fortunately this storm will not be a threat to the United States, but Jamaica may be in for a catastrophic event.

Jamaica's terrain is very mountainous, with the highest peak being over 7,000 feet. 20 to 30 inches of rain is expected to fall on some parts of the island over the next 72 hours. Flooding will be extreme if those rainfall totals do end up occurring. This, combined with the winds of a category 4/5 hurricane, is a worst-case scenario for Jamaica.

This may end up being the most powerful storm to hit the island of Jamaica in recorded history.

CATASTROPHIC AND LIFE-THREATENING WINDS, FLOODING, AND STORM SURGE EXPECTED ON JAMAICA TONIGHT AND EARLY TUESDAY

11:00 AM EDT Mon Oct 27
Location: 16.4°N 78.2°W
Moving: W at 3 mph
Min pressure: 908 mb
Max sustained: 165 mph

Jamaica: Do not venture out of your safe shelter. Catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides are likely today through Tuesday. Catastrophic winds in the eyewall have the potential to cause total structural failure especially in higher elevation areas tonight and early Tuesday. This will result in extensive infrastructural damage, long-lasting power and communication outages, and isolated communities. Life-threatening storm surge and damaging waves are expected along the southern coast through Tuesday.

Hurricane Melissa will be making landfall within the next few hours, and will be one of the strongest hurricane landfalls in history. This is going to be a horrific tragedy for all of Jamaica.

9:00 AM EDT Tue Oct 28
Location: 17.6°N 78.1°W
Moving: NNE at 7 mph
Min pressure: 896 mb
Max sustained: 180 mph

Only one hurricane, the Labor Day Keys storm of 1935, has ever made landfall with a pressure below 900 millibars (892 mb).

Melissa continues to strengthen as it's making landfall. Melissa is now likely tie or surpass the Labor Day Keys storm of 1935 as the strongest hurricane landfall in history.

10:00 AM EDT Tue Oct 28
Location: 17.7°N 78.1°W
Moving: NNE at 7 mph
Min pressure: 892 mb
Max sustained: 185 mph

To put things into perspective, before Melissa, the lowest pressure on record in Jamaica was 958 mb (1951’s Charlie), followed by 960 mb (Gilbert 1988). Hurricane Gilbert made landfall as a 130 mph Category 4 hurricane and was the strongest as far as winds are concerned.

The Air Force has captured jaw-dropping footage from inside the eye of Hurricane Melissa, which is expected to cause widespread devastation as it makes landfall in Jamaica.
