  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings Joey,
Thank you for confirming, yes I believe Panagia Paraportiani is the church that we saw in images of a recent mission slide show. We checked some images online and on a Greece-based mission Tiktok video interesting enough (becoming a thing these days) and is indeed a wonder to behold.

Picture of the church on Mykonos sent over by one of my old ministry friends who's also evangelized in the general region. Modest and yet full of splendor and the joys of humble worship, as so many of those early churches have especially on the coasts and islands of the Mediterranean.

What a spectacular sight! Just imagine joining the congregation to pray at a place like that, now and centuries ago. This truly one of the genuine joys of mission work, you really get to connect yourself and your group in a tangible way to your predecessors and to a history centuries and centuries old. And not just as mere history, as a living community with your brethren who sang and prayed there.

Greetings Cecile,
Quite well said! This is indeed one of the defining drives that draws so many of us to missionary work. It's a connecting thread that links us back to our forebear ministries from thousands of years ago. Continuing to preach and spread the joy of the Good News. It's an extra joy to do so in a community of like-minded souls with the same enthusiasm.

We haven't been to Mykonos but we were on Lefkada earlier this year, it's one of the mid-sized Greek islands off to the west, Ionian Sea I believe. It was an majestic experience, particularly for mission groups. A sizeable number of beautiful and inspirational churches and deep tradition. I'm having one of those days and can't quite recall the name, but there was one church in the particular that was extraordinary and stayed with us. From the Byzantine architects, a redoubtable design and beautiful frescoes within it. Reminded us of some of the churches on the French Mediterranean coast. Even without the icons, but the architecture on the coast seems it was similarly inspired.

Greetings Venables,
Yes we have heard of Lefkada in one of our Mediterranean-focused ministry teams. It is indeed on the Ionian Sea, and quite majestic by any measure. I believe I have even also encountered the historic church you are recalling. Amusingly I too am blanking on the name and more specifics, but the son of one of our missionaries was already masterful with a camera, and took a number of pictures of a church on the island.

With, I believe many a beautiful fresco and icon on the interior. It is as though the church's founders were taking their own versions of photographs centuries ago, sending them down to us to marvel at. You have in fact inspired me to get back in touch with them! From our initial teams gathered from our original church networks back in the US, we tend to form somewhat improvised small mission teams that then fan out across Europe. The one drawback being it's often easy to lose touch when focused elsewhere, as we are in France and Germany like many other teams. But the pictures of that marvellous old church on Lefkada are gradually stirring up a bit more in my mind. All the more reason to re-establish some contact.

Wanting to wish a happy Thanksgiving weekend to our mission squads preparing to make the move over. We got word in our own network that we have 5 families on tap coming to join our efforts in progress in next couple of months, in France and where we've fanned out. We've had great success lately with our conversion and new church construction areas of focus, and more and more community participation which makes it even more exciting. Happy to have you all join, you are blessed and you will be welcomed.

You may be thinking of the Lefkada Church of Panagia Hodegetria (Παναγία Οδηγήτρια)? It's a very old church in an old village, but yes incredible and moving frescoes, though most moved to an institution in Athens as I recall.

Picture of the church of Hodegetria on Lefkada, it's in the village of Apolpena if that ringing any bells. It's modest and yet has it's own humble beauty.
Greetings Joey,
Thank you for this. It is indeed a quiet gem and this does appear to line up well with what several of us had recalled, a small but splendid old church in a village not far from the shore. Greece is full of such magnificent small churches and it is indeed one of the great appeals of doing missions there, to be connected to that great heritage and even, if lucky enough, to help rebuild and refit them for a new generation of worshipers to come and rejoice under their roof.

A picture of that church on Lefkada referenced above, from some archives. The centuries-old churches on the Mediterranean coast often have this rustic majesty to them, places of quiet worship and meditation.

Thank for the picture! I couldn't post it up for some reason but so glad to see it here. Other churches around the Ionian Islands are similar, not too imposing but you're filled with calm and joy just at the sight of them in their villages.

Greetings Joey,
Glad to be of help. You've actually reminded me I have some old pictures and links for some of the beautiful parish churches in France, Germany and in the Nordic regions we'd like to post up, where our groups have been active for a few years, a beautiful reminder of what we're working for and the people we're providing ministry for.

And sending some best wishes to any of you tackling this historic snowstorm back in parts of the US. Several of our own member churches and mission teams, even in the south of Texas have been braving the cold and frost to put together and send a congratulatory care package for the kids at a newly inaugurated parish church in southeast of France, where several of our own mission families have planted down new roots, and even down in the Hill Country they're saying it's sheets of ice everywhere you look! Thankfully the Christian spirit remains undimmed and it's joyful smiles in every picture.
