  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Recently, the United States has experienced shocking acts and threats of violence against Christian communities and Christian voices that highlight a growing and troubling conflict.

On August 27, a person identifying as transgender opened fire during Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis, killing two young children and injuring many others. Authorities are investigating it as an anti-Catholic hate crime. Less than a month later, on September 10, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University during a public event of Turning Point USA.

  • Sophie (Nicholas) John Roske attempted the assassination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on June 8, 2022, in Chevy Chase, Md.
  • Audrey (Aiden) Elizabeth Hale was responsible for the mass shooting at The Covenant School, a Christian elementary school, on March 27, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn.
  • William “Lily” Whitworth, who identified as transgender, plotted shootings against three Colorado Springs schools and at least one church, and was arrested in March 2023 and sentenced on January 30, 2024
These tragedies have intensified the question: why is there such aggressive hostility in some quarters — especially among some who identify as transgender — toward Christian values? To be clear, not all trans-identified individuals share hatred or seek conflict with the Christian faith. But these incidents suggest there is a strand of antagonism that intersects with cultural, ideological, and moral disagreements.

I believe there are seven core reasons why transgender ideology often clashes with biblical Christianity.

1. The Bible teaches binary gender (Genesis 1:27)

CF limits how much we can talk about this question, and I will aim to stay within those limits. But I want to say this much. The author's headline asks about reasons for the conflict over trans issues, and the article asks "why is there such aggressive hostility in some quarters". I think one of the reasons for the emotional component of the conflict - the "aggressive hostility" - is the attitude that the author displays in his article. I hear the author saying that he is confident that his opinions on this issue are identical to God's opinions, that anyone who disagrees with him is disagreeing with God, and that anyone who dislikes his views is elevating him to the status of a martyr for God's cause. This really is a frustrating conversation-stopper. If his message to people who disagree with him is "repent of your beliefs, so that you will agree with me and thereby you will agree with God", then we can't even talk to each other. I hope that, as a Christian, I wouldn't be aggressively hostile, but we would certainly be stuck in an emotionally-laden conflict, and reconciliation isn't possible if we can't even begin the conversation.

Transgender people are under-represented in mass shooting statistics quite a bit, so Christian-posts sensationalist and polemical framing is unwarranted.

The shooter at Annunciation did not identify as transgender. They had apparently detransitioned and the motives were unclear. Churches are emotionally charged places, and some people with grievances may lash out at emotionally charged institutions for reasons that are difficult to categorize.

Where did you read that Westman de-transitioned? I've never heard that.

(Regardless, trans people are a teeny tiny minority, and most are victims of countless crimes, not perpetuators of it).

Investigators say 23-year-old Robin Westman, who opened fire at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis, was obsessed with killing children. The attack during the school’s first Mass of the year left two children, aged 8 and 10, dead and 17 others injured. Westman, a former student, fired 116 rifle rounds through stained-glass windows. Police uncovered chilling writings, videos, and a manifesto revealing violent fantasies, regret over gender transition, and plans to target kids.
